Where were you when the Atlas Foundry explosion happened?

Folks took a nostalgic look back on a blog post where I looked back on my 10 years of blogging. Inspired by this, once in a while I'll toss up a "Where were you...?" in this forums and hope everyone feels free to share and connect on collective milestones in our lives. If you have any "Where were you...?" questions you'd like me to pose feel free to email me.
So, where were you when you heard about the Atlas Foundry explosion? Did you see it? What kind of thoughts did it stir about your life and safety here in Tacoma? |
by AP on 2/28/2008 @ 10:11am | I was in Maui. Breaking News on CNN for me. I was sort of glued to the TV for an hour or so... seems like yesterday. |
by cassioposa on 2/28/2008 @ 11:10am | Earlier that day, I had returned from our company retreat via Hwy 16. Came home, took a nap for a bit. When I awoke and got online (yes I'm almost always on a computer), I saw reference to it on FeedTacoma which prompted a frenzy of searching websites and TV news stations for the official story. Turns out it happened during my nap, and I didn't feel or hear anything. Later that evening, however, Kevin and I were in a neighborhood near the Atlas Foundry, and much to my initial protest, stopped at Irving Park to see if it had been contained. It hadn't, which made one of us curious (*cough* Kevin *cough*) what pics could be obtained from our vantage point. While Kevin put up with much of my frantic argument where I claimed repeatedly, "But the park is CLOSED. We'll get in trouble!", he somehow convinced me to balance myself on a fence at the edge of the park and, while trying not to fall into a thick patch of blackberry bushes, see what I could do with a camera in hand. The pics I got came out pretty "meh" but the surreal thing was the sound and the smell coming from the foundry. The folks in the neighborhood right next to the park had already gotten used to it, although a few were out observing the containment progress while we were there. We also passed a few news vans parked on the streets, and I saw the occasional news reporter on a cell phone and sitting around as if they were waiting for something exciting to happen. |
by izenmania on 2/28/2008 @ 11:16am | Sitting in my apartment. It was pretty loud, and I had my windows open but blinds closed, so the shock wave blew all my blinds inward for a moment.
That's all I got. |
by AP on 2/28/2008 @ 12:34pm | Pretty powerful sound wave to move something as physically porous as blinds! Did it hurt the ear drums at all? And how much distance between blast zone and Izenapartment? |
by Mandiferous on 2/28/2008 @ 2:11pm | I was at a friend's house at the far end of Puyallup, so I didn't hear a damn thing. My mom called and warned me about it since I usually take hwy 16 to get home. I stayed at my friend's house for a few extra hours and then took an alternate route home. |
by jenyum on 2/28/2008 @ 2:14pm | I was in Connecticut and didn't hear about it until hours after it happened.
My neighbor said it blew her front door open, which I can believe, these old houses are pretty rickety. I have to bolt the door every time there's a windstorm. |
by EtherealDarke on 5/27/2008 @ 2:18am | That's right down the street from my house, and thankfully I wasn't home but my boyfriend was. I felt it at my friends house (right near Tacoma Dome) and thought something hit into her house. I called my boyfriend and he told me what happened, and our living room huge window popped out and was hanging, and then him and his mother came to get me, which took awhile.. then we were allowed to quickly grab some things from home but had to evacuate for that night and some of the next day.
It was crazy. |
by Twisty on 5/27/2008 @ 5:52am | I was driving southbound on I-5. I figured out later I must have been at about Port of Tacoma Road when it happened. By the time I got to the T-dome, the mushroom cloud and debris on SR16 had slowed traffic down to a crawl. |
