TNT: Light rail to Tacoma Will be up for vote

The Sound Transit board on Thursday approved a plan to add 50 miles of light rail across the Puget Sound region, if voters approve the tax increases to pay for it.

Link to the News Tribune

The brief article talks about costs of bringing light rail to Tacoma and how a vote for the latest Sound Transit plan would bring with it an increase of 0.5% to our state's sales tax.

That kind of transit is good for the area but I fear the tax issue will convince many that it's a bad idea.

I certainly like mass transit.

The big question will be whether the "cross-road" piece will be on the ballot. If it is on the ballot, should it be supported or opposed. The environmentalists have already stated they will oppose the package if it includes the "cross road" portion.

funny.. my dad and I were talking about what's left of the old Flett Dairy property tonight when I picked up the TNT and saw the article about the transportation package that's being worked on in the legislature. We had been talking about how all the awesome oak prairie habitat had been developed and taken over and how little there is left in Washington.

How is it that this cross-base highway has to go through one of our last true prairie lands? They can't cut down a few trees in that massive forest and side step the prairie? I'd love to see a highway through there.. but not if it means killing off one of the last examples of an already rare habitat :(

FYI: TNT is reporting the cross-base highway has been approved. Could be an interesting progress vs. environment battle ahead.

6/8 - "Cross-base highway approved as part of road plan", TNT

If it hurts an important environmental value, it ain't progress!
