It is no more dangerous for kids to walk or bike to school today than it was in the 70s when I did it. What's changed is that today we have media-driven hysteria and peer pressure among parents that makes them feel compelled to be over protective. More »

NIN - I like your response to kids using the city buses or working. They just sit there for 8 hours a day, only to memorize stuff to forget it later. More »

I love the spirited and thoughtful responses to the topic I posted. Obviously, there are some drawbacks to the position I have taken and perhaps my approach was a little bombastic, my apologies. More »

Parents should stop looking for schools that aren't in their neighborhoods. Yes, and schools districts should stop closing small neighborhood schools in order to combine schools in large expensive and relatively remote suburban schools where 99 percent of children have to walk to school. More »

I like the idea of kids riding the city bus to school. or instead of going to school, working in factories and help paying the bills for a change... More »

Fredo, I appreciate your being concerned with the future, as a lot of people aren't. And I mourn for the days when biking and walking to school more than a few blocks was a more viable ... More »

Jenyum-When oil runs out in 30 or 40 years or when diesel fuel reaches $10 or $20/gallon the school bus program will be concluded. Parents may weep and gnash their teeth, but it will be to no avail. More »

Oh, another point I forgot to mention: the district will not provide transportation to schools outside of the neighborhood unless: - It's a special program (like Grant's visually impaired program) dictated by a child's Individual Education Plan - the neighborhood school is defined as "in need of improvement under NCLB (this is a federal rule) In other words, the kids you see being transported there by bus aren't there just because Mommy wants them to go to Washington-Hoyt. More »

Most of the kids who live within walking/biking distance get there that way or by car. Buses are for the kids who live further out. More »

The curriculum may be advising students on tomorrow's Earth Day to make judicious use of declining natural resourses, but for the Tacoma School Board, it's business as usual. They recently budgeted $5.7M for next year's school bus funding. More »
