Parents should stop looking for schools that aren't in their neighborhoods. Yes, and schools districts should stop closing small neighborhood schools in order to combine schools in large expensive and relatively remote suburban schools where 99 percent of children have to walk to school. More »

Oh, another point I forgot to mention: the district will not provide transportation to schools outside of the neighborhood unless: - It's a special program (like Grant's visually impaired program) dictated by a child's Individual Education Plan - the neighborhood school is defined as "in need of improvement under NCLB (this is a federal rule) In other words, the kids you see being transported there by bus aren't there just because Mommy wants them to go to Washington-Hoyt. Most of the kids who live within walking/biking distance get there that way or by car. Buses are for the kids who live further out. More »
