This has traditionally been one of the benefits to working in the public sector, which is traditionally not the highest-paying work a highly-skilled person could do. There is a strong public interest in making health benefits available for council members. More »

The council members knew there were no health benefits when they ran for office, so it's not like anything was taken away from them. If what we are trying to achieve at city hall is an equitable distribution of benefits, as you seem to suggest, that could also be achieved by taking the health benefits away from the rest of the city employees. Um. They are getting health benefits based on the amount of time they work, at the same level as other city employees who work the same number of hours. More »
