FeedTacoma August Overhaul
|
by KevinFreitas on 7/26/2011 @ 10:12am |
Thanks to a generous sabbatical provided by my day job at SiteCrafting I have 4 weeks in August to focus on FeedTacoma! I have lots of new things planned for the site and will be updating everyone of my progress here. Work should start next week sometime! As always your ongoing feedback is welcome! |
by Thorax O'Tool on 7/26/2011 @ 2:48pm | bueno |
by NineInchNachos on 7/26/2011 @ 2:55pm | "adult services' section is a bad idea. |
by Jesse on 7/26/2011 @ 6:02pm | Thanks Kevin! I think I speak for the usual folks on here that we appreciate your work that makes feedtacoma possible. |
by cisserosmiley on 7/26/2011 @ 6:26pm | feed tacoma should have a food section |
by fredo on 7/26/2011 @ 7:01pm | How about an app where people could indicate geo locations of every pot hole and every tag in town sort of like the map of where sex offenders live. The city could access this info every night to help keep these problems in check. |
by CaptainBritton on 7/26/2011 @ 7:06pm | What Fredo says, and a comix-page-'stravaganza! Let me know if I can help...Or Halp, as the case may be...:) |
by KevinFreitas on 7/27/2011 @ 7:09am | @cisserosmiley: Reviews? Ratings? @fredo: I could add that kind of feature to the mobile version of FeedTacoma. Any other municipal-related features you might like to see? @CaptainBritton: More to come there too. :) |
by fredo on 7/27/2011 @ 8:17am | Kevin, the city wants people to call when they see grafitti or experience pot holes but his is really sort of an impossible task under the best of conditions. And who wants to be the cranky old complainer?
It would be better, in my mind, for drivers who see such conditions just to click a button on their ipod or other device hooked up to a GPS and log this observation which would constantly update an enlargable map of Tacoma with pinpoints of every pothole and every tag. These tags could dated in such a way that they begin glowing red if reports are still coming in after 7 days or whatever. If this information were uploaded to the city every night then the city could no longer claim they were not informed about the problem. If people could photograph the tags when seen those pictures could easily be associated with the locational information and that could picture could appear when the cursor was dragged over to the pinpoint momentarily. Just rambling here Kevin. Your feedtacoma website is....GRRRRRR reat! |
by NineInchNachos on 7/27/2011 @ 8:27am | maybe feedtacoma could partner with Tacoma Weekly's pothole pig ? Are they keeping GEO coordinates on all the potholes the feature? |
by Joel 413 on 7/27/2011 @ 8:44am | A bit selfishly I'd like to see a more dynamic, and potentially dedicated Frost Park Section of the site. I'm willing to spend some time working with you on this too. I've got some vacation lined up in August that is unplanned, I may be able to convince the spousal unit to allocate time. |
by fredo on 7/27/2011 @ 8:45am | it would be nice to position feedtacoma as the clearinghouse for all sorts of data related to making Tacoma a better place. It already interfaces to all sorts of blogs and so forth, and it's already a great place to engage in or begin discussions.
How about a column which enables people to easily see a restaurant map, events map, pothole map, sex offenders map, grafitti map, historic places map, non-conforming billboard map, bicycle lane map, The possibilities are endless. The work that tacomamama did on billboards really got me thinking. |
by NineInchNachos on 7/27/2011 @ 8:49am | brilliant Joel. more than just another event on the event page... the physical manifestation of feedtacoma power in real-life. Maybe a dedicated tab? link to the facebook group? A stream of the chalk flickr pool ? Adam the Alien video chalk reporting stream? Need to start putting the history in one spot... archive of past winner threads... Chalk wiki ? Sponsorship page? Who is sponsoring, who sponsored last time? |
by NineInchNachos on 7/27/2011 @ 8:53am | great idea fredo. Maps are good and maybe calls to action... most people don't know that you can report all that stuff and get it taken care of the 'one bus away' of pothole/junk/graffiti reporting |
by Joel 413 on 7/27/2011 @ 9:23am | @NIN I have all the data from last season compiled in a spreadsheet on Goggle Docs. I may have started compiling this for seasons 1 & 2, but I don't remember. I know I was grabbing pictures at one point to make hardbound books, but that fell through the cracks.
I'm working on conceptual database designs for the backend of a FP site including most of the features you've suggested above. |
by NineInchNachos on 7/27/2011 @ 9:28am | I have season 1 and 2 here !
www.holisticforgeworks.com/chalk/ |
by cisserosmiley on 7/27/2011 @ 9:28am | sometimes restaurants close so quickly i never get to try them, others have been here my whole life but change with time...there could be a discuss section where each restaurant could have an ongoing comment stream so there was a place to see everyones experiences |
by Joel 413 on 7/27/2011 @ 12:44pm | Here, I whipped this up at lunch...![]() Keep in mind this is not fleshed out, it's completely conceptual at this point. The various attributes, etc still need to be determined and assigned. |
by Thorax O'Tool on 7/27/2011 @ 1:03pm | I think what FP really needs is an automated voting system, one vote per user ID.
Not only will it be easier to keep track of, but it would tally itself. |
by Joel 413 on 7/27/2011 @ 1:16pm | @thorax - The database above would allow for that. that's why there is a separate table for votes that track person and art. In the voting mechanism you look for your conditions, has the person voted this week already, have they already voted for a certain piece of art. the time stamp also allows to see if a vote is valid or not. The vote needs to be recorded in the database before midnight in order to count. Huh, there's another inconsistency in the diagram: 1) there needs to be a table between art and person (for multiple artists) 2) the vote count attribute in art goes away, the vote tally is calculated from the votes table. good notes so far. Keep 'em coming. |
by KevinFreitas on 7/27/2011 @ 4:07pm | Great stuff everyone! I'm keeping notes on my priorities for the sabbatical and will post the list once I've finalized it. In other news... I've nearly finalized my selection of a graphic designer to reboot the look around here. I... can't... wait!
|
by thriceallamerican on 7/27/2011 @ 4:53pm | Joel's entity relationship diagram above and Venn diagram topics of yore suggest to me that FT could use more diagrams. |
by KevinFreitas on 7/27/2011 @ 10:41pm | @thriceallamerican: Merritt style? ;) |
by thriceallamerican on 7/28/2011 @ 9:49am | @KevinFreitas Not that I would name names... |
by KevinFreitas on 7/28/2011 @ 2:36pm | Got a wifi webcam in today and am testing it out to hook up a network around town. Pretty decent daytime quality:![]() If you know of any local offices that have great territorial views of Tacoma let me know so we can see about setting these up! I'm even happy to give logo credit to any business hosting a webcam on their 'net connection. |
by NineInchNachos on 7/28/2011 @ 3:29pm | talk to Laura Hanan ! |
by KevinFreitas on 7/28/2011 @ 3:35pm | Todd seems to have a stellar view as well...
|
by NineInchNachos on 7/28/2011 @ 4:55pm | oh yes. commanding view... I would argue the super best view! |
by TDI-Reporters-Notebook on 7/28/2011 @ 6:18pm | i'm game for a web cam at tdi world headquarters . . . --TODD |
by KevinFreitas on 7/28/2011 @ 6:29pm | Excellent... will be in touch. (do you have wifi?) |
by TDI-Reporters-Notebook on 7/28/2011 @ 9:21pm | kevin: wi-fi?!?! are you kidding?!?! have you seen our state of the art web site?!?! |
by wildcelticrose on 7/29/2011 @ 6:50am | I remember having and actual RSS feed from feedtacoma.com so that I could read from my google reader (not that I don't want to visit the page, but on busy days, it's nice to have everything in one place.)
Not sure why that feature went away, but I miss it. |
by KevinFreitas on 7/29/2011 @ 7:02am | @Todd: Haha, wired will do just fine as well. :) Do you have time today or next week for me to stop by? @wildcelticrose: Here's the RSS feed for all discussion www.feedtacoma.com/forum/rss/ I'll strive to make those more apparent in the future :) |
by fredo on 7/29/2011 @ 8:28am | "whistleblower" section could be interesting. people inside government and private industry give feedtacoma readers a first peek at what somebody doesn't want you to know about. |
by Nick on 7/29/2011 @ 10:09am | @fredo if that got used it could be awesome. The only question is, what would we call it? TwikiLeaks? TacoLeaks (eww)? |
by Nick on 7/29/2011 @ 10:11am | How about a Twitter counterpart to the Flickr photo feed? Maybe show a feed for everything tagged #Tacoma, and float anything tagged #FeedTacoma to the top somehow? Just some food for thought. |
by KevinFreitas on 7/29/2011 @ 10:26am | @Nick: www.feedtacoma.com/tweets.php Already on it. This will be more prominent real soon here. Those tweets are also available when doing a search of FeedTacoma. |
by cisserosmiley on 7/29/2011 @ 11:03am | fredos "whistleblower" section should be called "fredo's corner" |
by fredo on 7/29/2011 @ 11:29am | One of the most popular features of ft is kevins'
Clear Channel unpaid fine counter. I'll bet a thousand people have looked at this detail, some on more than one occasion. I'd like to see more counters running all the time like a stock market ticker tape. Here's one that I would personally do the calculations for: Fredo's estimate of unneccessary premium pay already paid to city employees. People would be shocked to see how much extra the city has paid to maintain the 70% payroll level. This is wasted money that the taxpayers got no value for whatsoever. It's way in the millions of dollars already and skyrocketing. I could come up with more counters, so could other contributors. |
by NineInchNachos on 7/29/2011 @ 1:37pm | I love the fine counter |
by NineInchNachos on 7/29/2011 @ 1:37pm | radio feed tacoma podcast! |
by KevinFreitas on 7/29/2011 @ 3:05pm | @RR: There's talk of this happening already. Stay tuned... So, what do y'all think of our first webcam placement? ![]() I hope to get the live version up and running for folks to view later today. Huge thanks to Todd over at the esteemed Tacoma Daily Index for donating the spot in his office window. |
by TDI-Reporters-Notebook on 7/29/2011 @ 3:15pm | i can see russia from here! |
by Marguerite on 7/29/2011 @ 3:25pm | I like it! It would be cool to have one with humans in it, too! I have the iSpy app on my iPhone and I love watching people going about their days unaware I am observing them! :)
|
by NineInchNachos on 7/29/2011 @ 3:26pm | can we turn it so we see todd sitting in front of the imac ? |
by NineInchNachos on 7/29/2011 @ 3:27pm | yeah can the link stop cameras be tapped into ? |
by KevinFreitas on 7/29/2011 @ 4:25pm | @Marguerite: More street-level cams to come. First up my very well be a 9th & Pacific/Frost Park cam once I chat with Les at Dorky's. :)
|
by KevinFreitas on 7/29/2011 @ 5:07pm | ...And perhaps Amocat as well!
|
by KevinFreitas on 7/30/2011 @ 7:28am | Here's a link to the [beta] webcams page! www.feedtacoma.com/webcams/ |
by KevinFreitas on 8/1/2011 @ 8:53am | Two more webcams on order. Here are suggested views I've heard you might like to see: - Frost Park/9th & Pacific cam (from Dorky's) - Sounder Construction cam (from Cheers?) - Ruston Way cam (from The Spar?) Any other ideas or people/businesses with views who don't mind sharing a little power and wifi? |
by cisserosmiley on 8/2/2011 @ 12:52am | How about an artists cam hanging over rr for "live-tacomic-ing" |
by Jesse on 8/2/2011 @ 8:05am | Construction cams: neeto idea. |
by NineInchNachos on 8/2/2011 @ 8:11am | @cissero doubt many folks would be interested in seeing that much weaponized procrastination |
by KevinFreitas on 8/2/2011 @ 10:36am | Oh, and another possible location that's been offered up of the 19th Street steps overlooking UWT and such. Going to also get in touch with Chris at The Red Hot to see about getting a 6th cam place there.
|
by tenach on 8/2/2011 @ 2:43pm | Good job with all this, Kevin! :D |
by KevinFreitas on 8/2/2011 @ 3:59pm | Thx @tenach. Got word from Chris at The Red Hot that he's game so I'll head over once the new webcams get in to see if the view of 6th Ave. is worthy. Oh, and you can now click on the image on the webcams page www.feedtacoma.com/webcams/ to see a time lapse of recent shots. |
by fredo on 8/2/2011 @ 4:04pm | that coverage detail is pretty cool. could all the webcams on your network have their coverage overlaid on one map with each camera assigned a different color? |
by KevinFreitas on 8/2/2011 @ 4:56pm | Yeah, each will likely have it's own map since the scale of coverage could differ pretty dramatically with each webcam. |
by NineInchNachos on 8/2/2011 @ 5:00pm | at one point we were promised the ability to 'draw in the comment box' How fun would that be for the comics? |
by fredo on 8/2/2011 @ 5:07pm | obviously I meant a coverage map for all the cameras which had street views or territorial views. If there's a camera inside Dorkys pointed at the Pacman machine that wouldn't have any geographic interest. |
by KevinFreitas on 8/2/2011 @ 10:08pm | @RR -- I haven't figured out the anti-penis drawing detection yet ;) I'll add that back onto the list though. @fredo -- Haha! Too true |
by Thorax O'Tool on 8/3/2011 @ 4:11pm | Ability to directly upload a photo from your phone
Also, not having to dig through several layers to upload a photo in the first place. |
by Joel 413 on 8/3/2011 @ 11:30pm | Not that this could be completed in 4 weeks, but an FT phone app would be neat. |
by KevinFreitas on 8/4/2011 @ 7:08am | @Thorax: I have ideas that may work from both mobile and otherwise. Thanks! @Joel: I'll be overhauling the mobile side of things but it will continue to be a [far better/more interactive than it is now] web app. |
by KevinFreitas on 8/4/2011 @ 10:45am | Look what UPS dropped off this morning:![]() Hoping to have both up and live (with thumbnail previews/links on the homepage) this weekend. |
by fredo on 8/4/2011 @ 10:46am | please don't point the cameras at any hot women in your office. |
by Nick on 8/4/2011 @ 2:33pm | Oh, maybe pull the image feeds from the WSDOT cameras in the area? |
by Thorax O'Tool on 8/9/2011 @ 3:19pm | What kinda 'net speed do you need for these webcams?
As it happens, I have a view from the UWT campus 40 feet up and looking out over downtown and the Port... |
by KevinFreitas on 8/9/2011 @ 9:42pm | @Thorax: Very little. Just need power and wifi and the rest only involves the camera sending a 40k JPG to my server every couple minutes. If you're willing to donate you're view I'm happy to come take a look! |
by TDI-Reporters-Notebook on 8/9/2011 @ 9:47pm | what happened to the red hot / 6th ave web cam? it was there over the weekend and now it's gone. |
by KevinFreitas on 8/17/2011 @ 3:52pm | I took it down after not being too excited about it being right in people's face. I'm more aiming for a neighborhood activity feel and that was just plain too personal. I'm exploring many other options to stay tuned! Good new, however, is that my sabbatical starts tomorrow! I'll be spending time organizing my plan of attack for new features and our new design and, along with that, will come up with milestones about when folks can start seeing these changes. I'm really excited and please feel free to keep making suggestions. If I don't get to them this time around it's still good to know what you want. Cheers! |
by fredo on 8/17/2011 @ 5:09pm | I can't remember if this has been suggested but it would be nice if at the bottom of the "post reply:" box there were two buttons.
One marked "post>>" and a second marked "post w/image>>" |
by KevinFreitas on 8/17/2011 @ 7:33pm | Thanks @fredo. I'll do one better and introduce a simple, rich-text editor that will allow for easier bolding, linking, and image inserting.
|
by Thorax O'Tool on 8/17/2011 @ 10:39pm | Sadly, no wifi is available there :( |
by KevinFreitas on 8/18/2011 @ 10:51pm | Today marked my first day on sabbatical and my FeedTacoma focus was one of getting focused. Taking what I know of how the homepage is going to be organized along with the new design I was tackling the best way to pull and merge data for that main feed and how to best make it easy (from a development perspective) to easily pull and utilize that data site-wide. There's still a few bumps about how best to temporarily store and sort that kind of data but, once I sleep on it, the solution will likely come. After a bit more planning/mapping out my plan of attack next week should see some code flying and, once I'm in the thick of it a bit, will be able to shout out some milestones for when folks can see some actual progress/deliverables take shape on FeedTacoma. |
by fredo on 8/22/2011 @ 8:30am | Hope it's going good for you Kevin. If you need some refreshments like a hot coffee from the Amocat and some donuts just let your bud Fredo know and we'll run some over to you. Gotta keep you on task!
Regarding your improvements, is there a way that certain discussions could display how many visitors or page views were being generated? The news tribune shows every day how many people looked at the online version of the paper. When we try to attract political candidates to feedtacoma to engage people it would be nice if they could see that they are reaching a substantial audience and that it wasn't just about RR and a couple other people. I'm thinking of my recent roundtable where 2 of the four candidates (the finalists ironically, Mr. Ibsen and Mrs. Smitherman, just stopped contributing). I would be interested myself in knowing if 5 people are following the discussion, or 50 or 500. Is that something you would be willing to share with the readers? |
by NineInchNachos on 8/22/2011 @ 8:40am | TIP: Fredo, you can set up a google analytics account--attach it to a blog and track that way. You're stuck using the forum which has a lot less features... but good suggestion anyhow. |
by fredo on 8/22/2011 @ 8:44am | thanks nachos, maybe the roundtable should have been setup inside a blog. |
by NineInchNachos on 8/22/2011 @ 8:57am | i know 'blog' sounds way more cheesy than 'discussion' under the +new tab up there... but I challenge folks to use blog instead. better for everyone! |
by NineInchNachos on 8/22/2011 @ 8:58am | add tracking... feedtacoma.com/account/blog-settings.php
|
by KevinFreitas on 8/22/2011 @ 4:51pm | Wifi is in at Dorky's so looks like they may be the next spot for a FeedTacoma webcam!
|
by KevinFreitas on 8/22/2011 @ 8:08pm | Breaking things down to build them back up. Time to write some PHP classes to make it easier to get/set data always flying around FeedTacoma.
|
by KevinFreitas on 8/23/2011 @ 2:13pm | Follow along at home, won't you? beta.feedtacoma.com/
|
by NineInchNachos on 8/23/2011 @ 3:39pm | gah! |
by Erik on 8/23/2011 @ 4:02pm | @Kevin: Awesome! |
by KevinFreitas on 9/5/2011 @ 12:50am | The new design and some new features on the homepage are up and live! I need to clean up the i.feed blogs but otherwise please let me know if you notice anything that needs fixing. More features to come with t-minus two weeks left of my sabbatical and counting...
|
by Thorax O'Tool on 9/5/2011 @ 12:53pm | Someone has to be the lamer in the room. I see no issues with the functionality, however... I don't like the new design thus far. The front page looks too much like every other "2.0" site out there. |
by KevinFreitas on 9/5/2011 @ 2:22pm | @Thorax: No worries, thx for the feedback. I wanted more of a Web 3.0 look but I couldn't afford to pay my designer to visit the future. ;) |
by NineInchNachos on 9/5/2011 @ 2:37pm | multiple 'pages' creation tool coming still? tacomic REALLY needs an about page yo. |
by KevinFreitas on 9/5/2011 @ 4:58pm | Thanks RR. Nailing the design and new homepage features took longer than I'd liked but I'm still hoping to get that going along with lots of other new features. Plenty more to come with just under 2 weeks of sabbatical to go...
|
by NineInchNachos on 9/5/2011 @ 5:51pm | sweet |
by Thorax O'Tool on 9/5/2011 @ 5:57pm | For those of us allergic to the tweeter, what if they showed up in the same color apart from the native Feed articles? They really are clogging up the main page.
Or perhaps an "expand" drawer for the tweets so they can be hidden? |
by NineInchNachos on 9/5/2011 @ 6:23pm | see the green box next to the "twitter' ? click it. Notice how it turns grey? all the tweets should be gone.
otherwise, maybe your browser is configured strangely? |
by Thorax O'Tool on 9/5/2011 @ 6:31pm | Or maybe I didn't think those were click-able things. Didn't seem obvious to me. |
by KevinFreitas on 9/5/2011 @ 6:52pm | You can also use the +/- buttons on the homepage to change the level of detail and size of each post on the homepage to see more/less in one glance.
|
by jenyum on 9/5/2011 @ 8:43pm | You know I love the twitterz, but I really don't like the way they totally overwhelm the feed right now. I'd rather have the option to view the "twitter" tab if I want to, and keep the blogs front and center. It's hard enough to get people to read a blog these days. Edited to say: I mean, make the twitter-less feed the default view that people see when they come to the site, unless they elect to see the "twitter" tab. |
by KevinFreitas on 9/6/2011 @ 9:33am | Thanks @jen. I'm hoping to add some info-graphics to help guide people in using the new design/features. I agree that pulling in #Tacoma tweets is a lot of new content but, at the same time, it brings in more of the local conversation that, as this long-time blogger knows, is no longer happening in the majority on blogs. I'm also working on another feature so people can choose whether or not they heart a blog post, tweet, etc. so folks can also sort in a more crowd-sourced fashion. Plenty more to do so I'd better get to it! |
by NineInchNachos on 9/6/2011 @ 10:03am | thanks Kevin. I'm loving the wider comment area under the comics pages. at last decent sized pics in the comments!
also my lame-stream flat panel monitor kills all light grey areas as white... can't see any dividers between comments and kinda makes it hard to see when somebody stops and a new voice takes over. |
by KevinFreitas on 9/6/2011 @ 11:05am | @RR: Yeah, I was squinting at those a bit tool. They're now darker with more padding between comments to help clear those up. Thanks!
|
by NineInchNachos on 9/6/2011 @ 11:30am | awesome. now that is community service! |
by TDI-Reporters-Notebook on 9/6/2011 @ 9:39pm | what happened to the live web cam from tdi world headquarters? the play/time lapse feature doesn't work and it's apparently broad daylight in tacoma right now (9:40 p.m.). |
by KevinFreitas on 9/6/2011 @ 10:54pm | I noticed that myself. :( Best guess is our weak wifi signal has gone dry. I'll be back in town next week if you have any time to let me invade to troubleshoot.
|
by NineInchNachos on 9/7/2011 @ 8:07am | Hey Kevin the email notification is rad. Only I'm geting like 3 of them at a time.... is it sending everytime somebody saves, edits typo then saves again? |
by NineInchNachos on 9/7/2011 @ 8:09am | also just posted and I seem to get duplicate comment posts |
by wildcelticrose on 9/7/2011 @ 8:11am | I've now gotten THREE post emails on RR's comments ;)
I got one email with six comments in one last night. Hey, how about getting that RSS feed back up and running? |
by thriceallamerican on 9/7/2011 @ 8:19am | Cool comment notifications. (Now how do I turn them off? Or on selectively per conversation?)
Good stuff Kev. |
by KevinFreitas on 9/7/2011 @ 9:18am | @RR @wildcelticrose: Yeah, not sure why the duplication is happening but bear with me while I figure that out. @wildcelticrose: RSS is still there but I don't know why modern browsers no longer link to them. I'll add links up top to help out. In the meantime you can still use www.feedtacoma.com/forum/rss/ to subscribe to everything. @thriceallamerican: Unsubscribe instructions are at the bottom of each email but it's just in your account settings at www.feedtacoma.com/account/settings.php Right now it's all or nothing but at some point I might be able to make it per conversation. |
by wildcelticrose on 9/7/2011 @ 9:22am | Ah,
I tried to find an RSS for feedtacoma.com on my Google reader and it said no such animal exists... I'll try the forum/rss/ |
by thriceallamerican on 9/7/2011 @ 9:24am | Heh. Actually reading the stuff at the bottom of emails is for chumps. Or something... :-) |
by KevinFreitas on 9/7/2011 @ 9:41am | @wildcelticrose: Also note I do not yet have RSS for the homepage feed up and running but intend to get that going soon as well. Stay tuned...
|
by KevinFreitas on 9/7/2011 @ 9:53am | @wildcelticrose: Alrighty, RSS is now linked up at the top of each discussion page!
|
by cisserosmiley on 9/7/2011 @ 9:57am | in the last couple days my table top machine always wants to notify bill gates of some error everytime i go to feed tacoma dot com |
by KevinFreitas on 9/7/2011 @ 10:15am | @cisserosmiley: Hmm, not sure what that might be. Can you email me a screenshot of the error? kfreitas@feedtacoma.com I've also updated how email notifications are being sent to hopefully speed that up when everyone posts comments. Let me know if you notice a difference. Thanks! |
by The Jinxmedic on 9/7/2011 @ 11:39am | I'm getting similar problems as Cissero. |
by KevinFreitas on 9/7/2011 @ 11:40am | Can you guys tell me what version of Internet Explorer you're using? 6, 7, 8, or 9? Thanks!
|
by KevinFreitas on 9/7/2011 @ 12:57pm | Anyone, signed in or not, can now "heart" posts on the homepage. Just click on the heart icon to show your love. I'll be working this afternoon on an option to sort posts on the homepage by this so whatever the community thinks is best will float to the top.

by Maria on 9/7/2011 @ 1:35pm | Great job with the refresh. I like that the site remembers whether I'm viewing or hiding Twitter, so I don't have to uncheck that option with each viewing.
The heart is a cool idea and a great way to filter what's interesting. Is your image getting cropped, though? The top left and left side are appearing a little square. Thanks for creating a place for discussions, news, action, art, community. FeedTacoma has a place on my bookmarks bar right next to Facebook, Pinterest, Kottke and Flickr. |
by fredo on 9/8/2011 @ 7:37am | theres a column of postings for get rich schemes like address labels and postings from homies looking for booty action. is that part of the new improved FT? |
by KevinFreitas on 9/8/2011 @ 9:28am | @Maria: You mean my avatar image? It's suppose to be that way, all artistically cropped and such ;) @fredo: You can turn off the tweets for now but I'll be working on some spam filtering to help get rid of the clear ads. Otherwise, those "homies" you refer to are part of the Tacoma conversation too. I think the tweets bring in new avenues on what people are talking about to FeedTacoma. |
by Maria on 9/8/2011 @ 6:26pm | Kevin: @Maria: You mean my avatar image? It's suppose to be that way, all artistically cropped and such ;) Ha ha, no--the gray heart icon that we're supposed to click to signal our interest/approval. I took a closer look today, and it's fine...maybe it's the way Firefox is anti-aliasing the edges. In the smaller size, it looked like the top and left side was flattened. Sorry, just being picky. RE: tweets. Is there any simple way to group tweets when they're repeats (i.e., retweets or @replies)? It would help to scan more quickly if replies/retweets were in a block. |
by KevinFreitas on 9/8/2011 @ 6:33pm | Oh, no worries at all @Maria. It's appreciated! Also of note: You can now sort by the hearted posts on the homepage. Just choose "Popularity" in the "Sort" menu. |
by KevinFreitas on 9/13/2011 @ 12:51pm | The new mobile site is live and allows for nearly all the same interaction (filters, sorting, hearting, commenting) that the regular site does but in a more thumb-friendly format! I've also enabled rich text editing for comments so it's easier to create links and insert images. Don't worry, power users, that "View HTML" option will let you edit the HTML of your post if you want. |
by Nick on 9/13/2011 @ 1:01pm | FYI - looks like the RTE box isn't working in Safari (maybe other WebKit browsers too). I basically don't get any text as I type, unless I switch to HTML mode. |
by Nick on 9/13/2011 @ 1:02pm | .... but to avoid closing on a bug report, I'd say that sabbatical was time well spent! Bravo on all the welcome changes! Loving the mobile site especially! |
by Nick on 9/13/2011 @ 1:08pm | In fact, I like that the mobile site isn't as "patronizing" as typical mobile versions tend to be. We get all the same content in roughly the same format, as opposed to getting a "dumbed-down" version of the site.
The general message I usually get from sites is that having a widdle iddy biddy scween means we couldn't possibly want or comprehend the complexity of the main site. |
by KevinFreitas on 9/13/2011 @ 1:14pm | Thx @Nick! I'll take a look at the RTE (works in Chrome)! I'm a fan of the mobile site myself because it uses CSS3 @media queries so no extra set of PHP scripts just to run it. |
by NineInchNachos on 9/13/2011 @ 1:32pm | using chrome in OS X, comment box thing no workie. have to edit after post and 'save' to see anything. |
by KevinFreitas on 9/13/2011 @ 1:36pm | Yay OS X -- seems to be where the Webkit problem lies. I'll keep playing with it but am in Linux here so may need help testing. (after some lunch) |
by KevinFreitas on 9/13/2011 @ 3:43pm | Alrighty, those rich-text editors should be all fixed up now. Thanks for the heads up guys!
|
by jenyum on 9/13/2011 @ 7:39pm | Nope, I'm still experiencing that problem. Using Chrome on Windows 7. |
by fredo on 9/13/2011 @ 8:31pm | Kevin, maybe there's something wrong with my computer but today your feedtacoma website looks all messed up. The fonts, the spacing, the layouts, all looks like it went thru a blender. |
by KevinFreitas on 9/13/2011 @ 10:27pm | @jenyum: I don't have a test environment for that but can you make sure you do a full cache refresh on any of those pages with an RTE to be sure? @fredo: If you go to the "Help" menu in your browser and choose "About" what browser version does it say you're using? |
by KevinFreitas on 9/16/2011 @ 4:02pm | Hey all, just fixed up a bug with the look of the site in IE 7 and 8. Anyone using that browser who's seen pretty much a text-only version should now be good to go. Apologies for the trouble but enjoy your new FeedTacoma!
|
by low bar on 9/16/2011 @ 9:03pm | Close the pulp mill and refineries. |
by troysworktable on 9/20/2011 @ 3:18pm | It's a small detail, but I really like the random Tacoma-icon green silhouettes in the upper right hand corner of each feed>>tacoma page. I am especially smitten with the seagull on pilings. |
by low bar on 9/20/2011 @ 4:50pm | The icon silhouettes are clever. |
by Joel 413 on 9/27/2011 @ 11:07am | I've had a login issue with the old and new site. When I am in a thread (i.e. a Frost Park episode) and I am not currently logged into the site, I cannot log in from the credential check at the bottom of the comments thread. I have to go to the login link in the upper right, log in then return to the thread. |
by NineInchNachos on 10/17/2011 @ 10:20pm | any update on the blog pages? custom css ? dying to get those! :) |
by KevinFreitas on 10/17/2011 @ 11:21pm | No pages yet but you can customize your blog CSS: www.feedtacoma.com/account/blog-settings... ("Custom CSS" field towards the bottom of that form)
|
by NineInchNachos on 10/18/2011 @ 8:05am | fixed? I'll have to try it out. Thanks Kevin! |
by wildcelticrose on 10/18/2011 @ 8:09am | Any idea when (or if and I missed it) there will be an RSS for the main page feed. I really miss that feature. |
by thriceallamerican on 10/18/2011 @ 8:34am | Regarding email notifications, it would be nice if the subject line of the notifications for a given thread was consistent so that Gmail and other tools that group messages by subject could key in on that instead of being separate messages for "BobUser1 chimed in on...", "SueUser75 chimed in on...", etc., for the same conversation. Just a thought. |
by Nick on 10/18/2011 @ 9:36am | Just though't I'd mention I also often have Joel's issue with the login form at the bottom of the comments. When I try to log in there, it usually comes back rejecting my login credentials. |
by KevinFreitas on 10/18/2011 @ 1:20pm | Thx gang! I'll check on that login issue and see if I can get that RSS up and running tonight. Stay tuned...
|
by KevinFreitas on 10/18/2011 @ 8:42pm | Ooooh @wildcelticrose... www.feedtacoma.com/rss/ (also linked up on the homepage) Enjoy!
|
by KevinFreitas on 10/28/2011 @ 2:09pm | Wanted to update everyone that I fixed up commenting via mobile devices that was rendering what you wrote as blank. Give it a try and let me know if you still have trouble. Hoping to look into the funky character issue in the next couple of days! |
by jenyum on 10/28/2011 @ 2:15pm | What seems to be causing it (for me) 1) Create post, with lots of pretty paragraph breaks2) Hit "Post"3) Paragraph breaks stripped out4) Edit post to delete br tags that don't seem to actually work, add paragraph breaks back in5) Paragraph breaks work but now ugly messed up characters |
by jenyum on 10/28/2011 @ 2:16pm | Lack of paragraph breaks in the preceding post brought to you by wysiwyg editor bug. |
by AndrewX192 on 11/17/2011 @ 11:37pm | I posted this advice in another post, but figured I should add it here since it is more on-topic. @KevinFreitas On the weird character problem, (assuming you are using MySQL): do you have your database, server, and client all set to UTF-8? I've noticed issues like this on other sites when one of those settings was been different than the others. Also: This shouldn't be the cause of the issue, but I discovered that the tag is not closed on the forum pages, there is a "head>" tag instead - this is reproducible on www.feedtacoma.com/forum/tacoma-developm... and www.feedtacoma.com/forum/tacoma-developm... |
by NineInchNachos on 11/17/2011 @ 11:58pm | Wow, nice work Andrew! Hey Kevin, might want to check into it. Lord knows Mr. X192 has helped me out of a few programming scrapes. |
by KevinFreitas on 11/18/2011 @ 7:20am | Took a look last night. Let's talk about it over here so we don't bother these nice people with email notifications. :) |
by low bar on 11/18/2011 @ 10:04am | i'd rather get spam from feedtacoma then have the choice to read exitpeepee or the volcan'to. |
by KevinFreitas on 11/18/2011 @ 11:41am | 'Preciate it, @low bar Tell your friends! :) |
by NineInchNachos on 11/18/2011 @ 11:48am | episode 3 of the volcano podcast was pretty short and sweet. |
by KevinFreitas on 11/20/2011 @ 7:08pm | Just took a look RR and couldn't determine anything going on with the custom CSS. Is it not saving the changes you make once you save them? If it is are you then not seeing those changes over the top of your i.feed blog? Thanks for the feedback/details! |
by NineInchNachos on 11/20/2011 @ 9:09pm | my blog is stuck in the luzon css. when I hit the load the simple css it dumps it into the text area. I edit something, hit save and it vanishes like nothing happened... no change to luzon. |
by NineInchNachos on 11/20/2011 @ 9:14pm | just tried it again. using chrome. basic template > loads in text area... try editing it.. hit save. page reloads with everything gone.. back to square 1. no changes to front end. trapped as the luzon bldg. it's a drag! But I know you can fix it sir! Hey Andrew, have you tried it? |
by NineInchNachos on 11/20/2011 @ 9:14pm | www.feedtacoma.com/account/blog-settings...
|
by AndrewX192 on 11/20/2011 @ 9:49pm | I can confirm this issue by going to my blog settings, clicking on "Basic Template", and clicking the save button on the bottom of the page. The form data is being posted to the server, so this does not appear to be a browser issue (though I tested in both Google Chrome and Firefox, and was able to reproduce the issue). I would also like to point out that when I click in this text editor (the "Post Reply:" one), I do not get a text cursor in Google Chrome. Almost every time I come here I forget about that and get confused for 1/2 a second before I remember that it doesn't do what I expect it to. |
by AndrewX192 on 11/20/2011 @ 9:59pm | One other thing: I have run into jenyum's problem where paragraph tags and other HTML get stripped out quite a few times, making my posts hard to read. This time I ended up reloading this tab in my browser before I could get it to cooperate. |
by low bar on 11/20/2011 @ 10:01pm | fuck volcano radio. two headed podcast is where it's at. www.twoheadedpodcast.blogspot.com/ |
by NineInchNachos on 11/21/2011 @ 8:01am | so how come it works for Kevin and not anyone else? I call shenanigans! |
by KevinFreitas on 11/21/2011 @ 9:31am | I'm not entirely sure. I checked through all the code and didn't find any special permissions checks that I often put in when testing new features out. Can you try saving something really simple in your custom CSS field then let me know once you do so I can check the db and such? Thanks! |
by NineInchNachos on 11/21/2011 @ 9:46am | tried: * {color:lime; }no workie. the page reloads with empty textarea. |
by NineInchNachos on 11/25/2011 @ 5:35pm |
ok the basic template loads and seems to stick when edited... however the luzon skin remains unchanged.. ? |
by NineInchNachos on 11/25/2011 @ 5:58pm | digging into it a bit more... disabled luzon css with fire bug... cant see the altered user css being saved anywhere on the front end. |
by NineInchNachos on 11/30/2011 @ 4:10pm | hey kevin!!! custom css is showing up on the landing page! i.feedtacoma.com/NineInchNachos/ but not when you drill down to individual post... i.feedtacoma.com/NineInchNachos/bizzaro-... hope this helps! |
by KevinFreitas on 11/30/2011 @ 4:26pm | Aha, it certainly does! That's good news. I'll make sure the same logic applies everywhere for that to show properly. More to come...
|
by NineInchNachos on 11/30/2011 @ 4:29pm | excited at the prospect of editing the tacomic page css too. :)) |
by KevinFreitas on 12/4/2011 @ 10:48am | Alrighty, your i.feed blog is now showing your custom CSS everywhere! Enjoy! |
by NineInchNachos on 12/4/2011 @ 5:42pm | Thanks Kevin1!!!!!!!!! |
by Joel 413 on 12/8/2011 @ 10:06am | Any chance that we could unsubscribe from a specific conversation rather than just a blanket unsubscribe? |
by KevinFreitas on 12/8/2011 @ 10:23am | I hope to get there, definitely, it's just not built yet. I'll see what I can do in my spare time over the next couple weeks.
|
by NineInchNachos on 12/8/2011 @ 1:42pm | enjoying the custom css for the blogs. can't wait to see that same feature hooked up to the comics pages ! :) |
by NineInchNachos on 12/8/2011 @ 1:51pm | just a thought, but on the drill-down comics pages... like comics.feedtacoma.com/tacomic/tacomic-ne... can we switch to the minimalistic thin main feed nav banner as seen on the blog pages? thanks! |
