What Shoppe window smashed.

The What Shoppe at 740 Broadway (Across from Sanford and Son) became victim of a nighttime brawl that resulted in someone being thrown through the plate glass windows of the shop. Product loss could have been worse, but they will have to replace the windows. Phillip and Charlotte are long-time Tacoma business owners (and artists) who have stuck with it through thick and thin, and don’t deserve this setback. The What Shoppe has a wonderful, eclectic array of merchandise, and carry Juxtapoz and the wonderful magazine “Illustration.”

This doesn't surprise me - there are way too many over-served and obnoxious people out from the bars looking for fights and looking to trash personal property just because they are shit-faced and someone looked at them wrong. I'm tired of people throwing up on the storefronts, pissing all over everything, smashing bottles and the biggest issue screaming 'til 3 or 4 in the morning. The bars need to be held accountable for their obnoxious patrons.

I guess drunks make owners and landlords too much money. MOST of the Broadway merchants are community, and watch out for and help one another. But it's hard to prevent things like this from happening in the middle of the night. I talked to Charlotte from the What Shoppe today, and she said it was not only the window glass from both windows, but the metal frames, which had stood for 100 years. I guess the person responsible was just out of jail, and went back again without passing go. Unfortunately, this doesn't help pay for the glass, not does the landlord or their insurance pay for it. So What Shoppe is on the hook for more than a few thousand dollars. If anyone knows of any routes for victim compensation, or reasonable replacement of the windows.... Business is already slow in the summer, and the LID construction isn't helping. This is tough for such a small business to absorb.

The business should not have to absorb this. The owner and/or their insurance company should handle this. One of my leasee's windows was shot with a bb gun and I had to pay for it as the owner, unfortunately out of pocket (my insurance deductible was $10,000).

The What owners should read their lease - my tenant originally thought that they were going to have pay to replace the window - I read the lease and it was clear it was my responsibility. The lease should clarify things - front windows are usually considered part of the structure and are the owner or insurance company (for the owner's responsibility)
