Poor, unsuspecting commuters were greeted by an insane mess by the Tacoma Dome this late afternoon. A semi trailer full of old car parts or something overturned right next to the Tacoma Dome exit. It was so close to the exit that nobody was allowed to use the exit. At 5:30, the trailer was still laying on its side, allowing a one-lane trickle of cars to pass (this is right where both north and south directions of I-5 merge into downtown).
To add insult to injury, literally, Faith Hill and Tim McGraw concertgoers were already streaming into the downtown corridor (McCabe's) and would continue to do so for hours. I assume that there are many disgruntled folks in cowboy hats sitting on I-5 right now wondering how the first half of their concert is going.

We work a block up from McCabe's and were blown away by how many people were filling the area streets and sidewalks. Despite the traffic issue that I wasn't aware of, Tacoma needs to bring more events with this kind of draw to town. Still, I guess we'll take what we can get -- country or otherwise. ;) |

by jenyum on 6/15/2007 @ 8:39am | That explains why the Link was running until Midnight last night. I saw signs about the extended hours, but no explanation as to why.
Argh, about the traffic snarl. I'm all for bringing more people into Tacoma, but not if they're already angry before they get here! |

by AP on 6/15/2007 @ 8:58am | The Tacoma Dome is the key to bringing that many people in. My recommendation is that the Tacoma Dome pulls its head out and starts booking more large events. Obviously, the very first step towards this goal would be to remove the stinkin neon mess from the inner wall. Everything else should begin to fall into place naturally once we see to it that this gets handled. |

by KevinFreitas on 6/15/2007 @ 9:50am | jen: Last night was also "Night on the Town" so that may have also contributed to the late Link. Nice to see them continuing to run it late for occasions like this though.
AP: the Dome is a great venue and hopefully the life of this city will help bolster the view that big things can and do happen here. We just need to keep the roads clear, I guess. ;) |
