Street tree lovers...pick up your rakes!

The city of Tacoma is asking people who have accumulations of leaves in the gutters in front of their homes to please rake up the mess before it clogs the cities storm sewers.

I'm placing this information on the feedtacoma web site because of the proliferation of street tree lovers who frequently avow their love of big leafy trees hanging over all the streets in town. What better way to show your love of trees than to get out there for a couple hours a day and clean up the mess? This effort will help you avoid property damage for yourself and your neighbors.

I have a weird hobby of clearing storm sewers, there is something oddly satisfying about clearing them.

Chris@ Your're one of the blessed few who seems to "get it". Thank you for your community spirit.

Funny thing... is it possible that my street does not have storm drains? Oh, wait, way down at the corner. I'll go clean it out right now. Thanks, Fredo. Some of us just need a little push now and again.

Oh it's not community spirit, it's a love of unclogging things. Our bathroom sink was stopped up forever, I took it apart and unclogged it, it was so satisfying. I should have been a plumber.

If there were a listing of great Feed>>Tacoma user quotes, I think "It's not community spirit, it's a love of unclogging things" would be on it.

oh my gosh. i just picked up a few leaves and it was so much fun. it reminds me of being a kid, playing in the dirt, building dams and such. when you remove a clump of leaves, the water just rushes through. word to the wise: use a rake. i used my hands because i have a wierd aversion to tools, and the asphalt is a bit tough on wet fingertips. also, take a trash bag in addition to your compost bin; there was a bit of garbage that i guiltily left behind.

My neighbor's very prickly about doing yard work on/near his property, but I cleared the street most of the way down to the corner. If I just do my strip I just create a dam.

Neighbor on the other side was generous with his leaf blower though and made my sidewalk pretty. Of course, there are still several tons of leaves on my grass, waiting to blow back into the street, but the yard waste bin is now full.

Whatever your motivation, you're all making Tacoma proud. Thanks for being so responsive.
