feed>>tacoma bike club ride 3: across the water?

It has been suggested that this weekend's ride expand our horizons a bit by riding across the bridge into the Gig Harbor area. Assuming we do this, I am going to need someone else to take up the reins of planning. For one thing, I don't know the area at all, and for another, it's vaugely possible that I won't make it this week. Saturday may be booked up... then I have practice Sunday morning. I can ride Sunday afternoon, but want to make sure I'm back in time to go to at least some of the Urban Arts Fest.

Heather? Do you and/or your dude want to pick it up this weekend?

(P.S. any other readers, whether they've ridden with us yet or not, are welcome to suggest/plan rides. So far everything we've done has cut through the North end, but any more varied ideas are welcome)

They've added more trails near the Narrows and out by Hwy 16 in the west end. Has anyone explored those and how are they?

I believe that was part of the planned adventure. We rode on the Scott Pearson trail starting a few blocks to the East of Jackson, which follows the 16 all the way, but I don't know how it is the other direction (from the map it looks like it heads down and ends at Titlow).

Hey Joe, we will gladly do the planning for this. We are stoked about the Taste of Tacoma and the Urban Arts Fest also. I started a map of my over the bridge ride idea, but then suddenly got a job, which has had mee running a dead sprint since Monday.

Of the top of my head, because I want you to join us, Sunday sounds good, right after your practice and ending at the Urban Festival. It is at Firemans' Park? Correct?

The Scott Pierson trail does connect with the trail over the Narrows Bridge. That trail ends but a short street trek puts us on a trail that goes all the way to the Gig Harbor Park and Ride. We could ride from there to downtown Gig Harbor (a 12 mi round trip from the Hwy 16 pedestrian bridge), but I think we'd rather return to Tacoma and head on down to the Urban Fest.

This is all off the top of my head and I promise to give a more detailed plan before Sunday. Do you think you'll be done with practice by 11 or 12?

Hm... we usually finish practice at more like 1. I was hoping to get out of there by noon on Sunday, but not for riding... I would like to see my friend Stephanie play at 12:30 at the Urban Arts Fest

Is there any chance we could bump it to Saturday? And then maybe end at PD for the Taste? Since the Taste doesn't end until 9 on Saturday there's less of a time crunch than there would be to get to the UAF Sunday. Plus (and it's up to you if this matters) you wouldn't have to deal with riding up the hill out of downtown after a longish ride.

Edit in: especially since leaving the UAF, according to the current forecast, will be in the midst of about 86 degree weather...

Other possible option: start rather than finish at the UAF?

*bump up*

Opinions on Saturday vs. Sunday?

I'm "working" at the Proctor Market on Saturday, then going to Taste, and then to a friend's birthday celebration. I don't think we can squeeze in a ride. Darn it. It just doesn't seem feasible. Oh wait. Starting at UAF on Sunday after Stephanie's 12:30 show sounds like a great idea, except for that hill ;)

Okay, let's go for that, then. I will fill my Saturday in other ways, and then gun for a ride at, say, 2PM?

To be honest... I don't know how much we're going to want to ride in 86 degree direct sun. I say we all just sort of meet up at the UAF and see who feels like what.

so firemans park at 2pm? is there a specific meeting location?

by Heather on 6/29/2008 @ 10:00am
Oh, Joe --- you read our minds. I'm not sure that my delicate self can handle the heat. However, we will be at UAF at 2pm. How about the Gazebo as a meeting place?

by d0ug on 6/29/2008 @ 10:26am
gazebos it is

I know it's too late for anyone to get this, but... I think I'm going to have to wuss out on this one.
