"Live After Five" - Anyone Tried it Recently?

I've been doing a bunch of calendar updates this week, and I took another look at Live After Five today:

tacomadmg.com/livethurs.htm

the problem I run into whenever I start researching this (aside from the fact that I can never actually get there myself and just check it out) is that the list on the website doesn't seem to match up to the actual hours of the businesses.

The ones I think are most interesting for families only seem to be open that late during the third Thursday art walk. (like Tacoma Art Supply, and Tacoma Glass Blowing Studio) I'm wondering if the list is just old.

Has anyone tried it recently? If anybody is going tonight I'd love to hear what's available on a non-artwalk Thursday night.

I had been staying open late on Thursdays until 8:00 for a while (Tacoma Art Supply). I think in about 6 months I had 1 or 2 people come in after 6:00.

Now the problem for me is probably due to my published hours are different, but can't go back and change the phone books or some non-paid listings on websites. So, I've limited my "alive after five" to 3rd Thursdays and after about a year now, the traffic is still about zero.

I think the only way to get the barely "alive after five" going is to get all the retailers, etc. together to participate and motivate them with search lights lots of them in vital areas (like out in front of my shop, ha ha.) and extra-civic events down-town to attract the public to down town after 5. Otherwise it tends to be the 3rd Thursday Art Walk thanks for the free wine and I'll think about the art purchase crowd.

Perhaps as we approach the fall-back time change the searchlights all over town would be a good idea.

Generating weekday night life in Tacoma is still a tough sell, that's for sure. I'd be willing to wager Warren's not alone.

I think all the great local happy hours do well in getting some folks downtown after work but how to get that to trickle into local shops is a mystery to me. I think Tacoma works well as a destination for food and the museums but not yet for shopping.

I think having a few staples like a grocery and/or big name clothing store would bring more people here for some of their basic needs and the smaller shops would help keep them here.

Just my $.02

I think you are right, Kevin. There needs to be some big draw to get people there, then they'll stay and look around.

What's the latest god-awful trendy destination restaurant? When downtown Seattle was dead in the mid-nineties, Planet Hollywood brought in a bunch of new traffic.
