Downtown Merchants Group Debuts New Map and Logo

TACOMA—Tacoma's Downtown Merchants Group will celebrate the introduction of the new Downtown Tacoma map and a distinctive, new logo at the group's monthly meeting on Thurs., May 3rd from 8:00 a.m. – 9:00 a.m. at the Pantages Theater.

The new map highlights approximately 575 Tacoma businesses and enlarges Downtown Tacoma's footprint to include portions of the Stadium and Dome districts. 160,000 maps have been produced to distribute to Tacoma-Pierce County visitors, prospective residents and business owners through stores and restaurants in the region, the Convention & Visitors Bureau and the Chamber of Commerce.

"This marketing tool has historically been the most utilized piece in downtown. We have just undergone an extensive 're-design' and have showcased a much more inclusive downtown footprint," DMG President Patricia Lecy-Davis said.

"The Downtown Tacoma map has been a model for maps in other cities. At first, we were worried about filling up the space, but the real problem always turns out to be finding space for all of the businesses," said Phyllis Harrison, owner of The Art Stop and DMG map project lead.

Map sponsors include: City of Tacoma Economic Development, Downtown Tacoma Business Improvement Area, Pierce County, Sound Transit, plus the Convention & Visitor Bureau, Greater Tacoma Convention & Trade Center, Pierce Transit, Port of Tacoma, Rusty George Creative, and a number of individual merchants and businesses. A cake featuring a copy of the map will be part of the celebration at the Thurs., May 3rd meeting.

The group's new logo also will be unveiled at the meeting. "The logo is designed to illustrate downtown Tacoma as it is today, while building on the city center's rich history. We selected a design so that all types of downtown businesses from retailers to hoteliers to restaurateurs would feel a part of the momentum," said Sherry Hopson, co-owner of Headliners Salon, who designed the mark. The group's Executive Committee, comprised of Lecy-Davis, Hopson, Secretary Rose Calvin of The Learning Sprout, Treasurer Valerie Coty of Moss Adams, Past President Marty Campbell of Buzzard's and Vice President Ken Grassi of Grassi's, is excited about the new tagline as well. "'Downtown Business Downtown Life' truly captures the excitement and spirit of Tacoma's downtown today," Grassi said.

Non-members and Tacoma-Pierce County residents are invited to the unveiling celebration. For more information, contact tacomadmg@gmail.com or call (253) 284-6469.

Tacoma's Downtown Merchants Group was founded in 1997 and focuses on providing advocacy, community and economic development for retailers and businesses located in the downtown corridor.
