March 10th: Rally Against Tacoma's Ban on Hip Hop

Tacoma recently passed legislation that will ban hip hop shows from Tacoma's public venues. The legislation came into effect last Friday. Tacoma hip hop artists and producers heard about this just recently and are staging a rally at the Pantages Theaters, Downtown Tacoma, Monday, March 10 at noon.

The community-led rally will be in front of the Pantages Theater at noon on March 10th.

Be there to show your support.

I am glad that our friend pongo posted encouraging us to attend this event at a time that had already passed.

Anyway, according to the discussion on 253hiphop, it didn't really happen.

Also, I don't see any evidence that Tacoma has passed legislation that will ban hip hop from Tacoma's public venues. All the releases regarding this hoped-for rally mentioned a variety of bureaucratic techniques to prevent the show, but no outright ban.

Probably just the noise ordinance. No specific ban for the type of music. Any movement like that would make the national news which, I assure you, hasn't happened.

I don't think the city cares about the hip hop music, they don't want men walking around with their pants down around their knees. They thought they eliminated that when they closed the Mecca Theatre.
