What say we start a "Friends of Tollefson Plaza" and meet up after work on Fridays to share some wine and maybe live music?

Are you thinking like wine in slurpy cups? I dont think this would be a bad idea once it gets warmer

I am always in favor of sharing live music. It's what I do.

What is the legal stance on consuming alcohol in a public place like Triangle Square?

Sure. As long as its not at Tollefson Plaza.

How about if we have some sushi next door and plan some public art or events at Tollefson. The pole climbing event worked pretty well. There was also...well...did I mention the pole climbing event?

Now that we have Tollefson Plaza and are stuck with it for awhile, how about some very large rotating art pieces? Like 50 feet high? Might as well do somethingw with the concrete.

With Paul Ellis leaving, I wonder what will happen to the scheduling of events there.

I think there is a law against open containers of alcohol. One can get a license to do so in a set area. The only place that kind fo worked for that was the platform above by the Marriot.

I'm a big fan of the space and its potential and want to see it used. What about making it a Friday Picnic in the Plaza? Folks can bring some food and drink to share with at least a couple other people, some blankets, and maybe their favorite board or card game. Maybe some local music, dance, or art groups wouldn't mind performing or practicing for tips. Ooo, maybe even the Horns of Destiny could get back together and play there once in a while.

Did somebody say "local musicians"?

*plots and schemes*

As mentioned in the other thread, I wonder if this would be better suited to a Saturday so we're restricted by neither lunch hour nor sunset.

The Plaza could certainly handle a large music event. There are not alot of places downtown to set something like this up.

Depends on the group... if you take Out Of Sight, Out Of Mind or Mr. Fusion (two groups I play with), all we require is a place to stand... I guess amplification might be nice someplace like TP, just because of traffic noise, but not required.

I keep walking by there going "Will there ever be anything that actually uses this amphitheatre?" Guess it's time to stop wondering and simply cause something to use it.

I would like to see the top tier ringed with bagpipers.

There's power outlet boxes in the plaza so I don't think amplification would be a prob at all.

I thought their was one of those living statues in the Plaza yesterday. I was on my way back to the office with coffee in hand, when glancing over I say a man in a white based, color splattered suit and hat standing perfectly still. When his pose changed for a moment and then froze into position again I decide to check it out. I was on the phone to my wife and I told her, "There is this living statue guy in the Plaza and there is NOONE around him. I have to go take a picture of this and keep him from getting to lonely out there."

The timing was right as the light was green to cross the walk and I made a sprint for it right toward him.

Unfortunately he wasn't a living statue, and I think I scared the crap out of him cause he gave a jolt and then started off quickly the other way.

I promise not to scare any musicians who decide to play.

Anyone see the BIA post about management of the Plaza?

tacomadowntown.blogspot.com/2008/02/toll...

Sounds like the Chamber will be taking the reigns overall but the City and Tourism bureau will have rights also to schedule the space. This is good news as it will actually provide some clearer points of contact for putting on an event.

The question this raises in my mind: Is Tollefson Plaza a public park where people can gather at will anytime for impromptu activities?

My colleague, Joanne Buselmeier, has been the drving force for much of our progress--and she's not leaving.

Check the post on BIA Blog--it's all there!

Sweet. At least now I know I wasn't hallucinating. I must have caught him at the very end when he was taking off from the Plaza.

I am laughing hard on the inside right now.

I noticed that too! I haven't plugged anything in yet though so I'm not sure if they are live. Hmmm, the wheels are turning...
