A Chalkie Proposal: End of Season

by izenmania

I'm sure people will keep going to the park, and some will keep , but I think at some point we should call an end of season on the Chalk-offs. As it gets down to only 3 or 4 people showing any week the competition gets less interesting, and at some point we're going to run out of sponsors.

Anyone object to calling October the end of the season? That way we have an even 30 chalk-offs, plus we close on Halloween. Or do you just want to keep going with the same four people every week until the weather gets better?

I was thinking about this last week and agree with you. Let's call it a season and get back into it next spring. I love watching the chalk from week to week but it's been getting a little sad.

Let's make the Halloween chalk-off a big one. I volunteer to bring spooky-themed snacks and an appropriately themed soundtrack.

I second the notion.

People will get burned out, and our ship will loose steam well before we get to next spring. A break will do everyone some good. I think moving into some nighttime (meaning after 5p) get-togethers will be fun to explore and interesting to see how the locals interact

Kevin's been talking about doing a [food/clothing/donatable product] drive one Friday... maybe we could try to put that together for Halloween? Maybe look for a tent in case of Weather?

I'm sure people will keep going to the park, and some will keep , but I think at some point we should call an end of season on the Chalk-offs.

In the end people are going to have different inclinations to show up at Frost Park. I had though of having a set number of episodes, but then I realized no one had any authority to call off anything at Frost Park.

On one hand, it is getting colder. On the other hand, people still have to work and enjoy going into Frost Park as well as any other park such as Wright Park in the winter.

I suspect some people are still going to have an inclination to get out from their cubicals on Friday at lunch. Even in the winter.

The activities at Frost Park or any of Tacomas other parks, if any, will be what people make them.

I can't predict what will happen on Fridays. Frost Park remains a blank slate for creation.

I look forward to what will be done as winter approaches and what ideas might gain some energy. Perhaps a winter oriented challenge. Maybe just hot chocolate. Maybe nothing. Perhaps RR will just chalk solo against the elements.

The blank creative synergistic vortex of Frost Park awaits the next display of artistic leadership, skill and valor.

I like the idea of a Halloween charity end to everything. Chalk or Treat for Charity perhaps? We'd need a big push to get people out to make it worth while for whomever we collect food/goods for.

I would like to invite ALL the Chalkies down to (one) for an End Of Season Chalk-Off Get Together.

I'll have some beverages and snacks.

I've met a lot of really nice people during chalk-off.

When: October 31st

Time: After the Chalk-Off 1:00pm until 4:30pm

Where: You can enter on 744 Commerce or 743 Broadway. I'm on the Middle Floor.

See you there!

Aye.

It's been a hell of a chalking season, that's for sure. Let's go out this month with a bang! More to come.

Brainstorming different angles: Was tossing some ideas around with Kevin last Friday. It would be possible to find a covered location, but then another location wouldn’t be Frost Park. We discussed about using portable chalk surfaces, easel-like, able to move under the covering adjacent to Frost Park, but thet wouldn't be the same. I’d hate to lose the momentum, especially after the Frost Park documentary – especially if it gets wider distribution, but then again no Chalk-Off regulars showed up to watch either showing anyway. If we do cease, and then we get some unusually nice weather, it doesn’t take much to spread the word and do an impromptu Friday now and then. But being consistent is good for public participation. I think it would be sad if the thing that dictates whether we continue or not is corporate sponsorship. If so, then I guess the Chalk-Off sold out long ago. Is it about community, impromptu public participation, filling the park, or is it about sponsorship and the handful of regular prize winners? I don’t know the answer to that. If it’s going to cease for the winter, I think a date should be made clear when Chalk season it is to resume. Maybe 30 weeks out of 52 is enough. I have an idea: After that, if the weather's good, let's all bring sack lunches to Frost Park on Fridays and hang out.

I don't think anyone is suggesting a cessation of Frost Parking... we were there in snow prior to the Chalk-Offs, after all. Just a halting of the "get a sponsor, have a prize, add to the list of winners" official process. I'll continue hitting the park regardless, and I would hope that on decent days we'd still see some chalking and whatever else kind of art happening. But this would give us a chance to recharge our sponsors, competitive creative batteries, etc.

As for [product] drive cover... Tacoma Art Supply has a tent that they let Andrew use for his origami thing in TP. Perhaps they could be convinced to provide for us?

I have always liked the idea of a Chalking season, with rebirth each Spring and a slate of episodes.

Season 3, Episode 6 sounds better to me that Episode108. I can better get my mind around that.

People stood around in Frost Park in the snow and rain just talking before the chalking began and will hopefully continue to do so.

I am with Dave L on the start date front. If you call something an end to a season, then there should be a determined beginning.

Both an end and a beginning should be a collective determination, and happen as organically as possible. If people want to chalk on then they will.

That being said: Aye

O.K., looking at it that way Izen and droid, I "aye." Like the entire event, it's chalk, and nothing's etched in stone anyway. I'm for a break in the prize angle, and perhaps Erik and others could use a break from digging those up. After I wash off Lance's Sea-Tac, I could use a break from the weekly washing. (jk). As corny as it sounds, I just want the spririt to continue, in some form or another.

aye for the chalk season. Though if it is sunny I might buck the bank and do something engrossed in the passions of sunshine though.

It's been a fun run.

you've all been so groovy. I'm sorry I couldn't make it to the chalk film showing.

excelsior!

This is a perfect time and place to mention this. I've met with Stephen and Gretchen Nogler of Pinwheel Catering and Herban Cafe today to finalize plans for the Frost Park Retrospective show this month.

I am pleased to announce that the show will be on the 25th of October from 6pm to 10pm with the first hour open to contributers to the show. Gretchen and Stephen will provide free appetizers and there will be a pay bar from 7pm to 10pm.

This is a great way to celebrate the success of the Chalk Offs and the Take Back the Park community drive.

I encourage everyone that has participated in the Chalk-Offs to reproduce at least one of their past entries in a more permanent medium for inclusion in the show. I also invite anyone who has taken photos at Frost Park to make prints of your favorites, frame them and include them in the show. The Noglers have graciously given us a ton of wall space to hang stuff on and I hope to fill the walls with chalk related memorabilia. They are willing to hang the work for 4 months throughout the Winter season. Selling displayed work is also encouraged.

The Herban Cafe plans to reopen for business on the 26th so the Frost Park Retrospective on the evening of the 25th will be a preview of the restaurant as well.

Anyone interested in participating please contact me at jamesstoweart@gmail.com.

I hope that everyone plans to attend. I am very excited about it. It is definately the best prize I've gotten from the Chalk-Offs thus far.
