Ths week's Frost Park Chalk (clean)off

by Dave L.
on 7/1/2008 @ 6:58pm
Is this a good spot to bring this up? Who wants to help wash off last Friday's chalk in preparation this Friday, Independence Day? And what day or evening is better, Wed or Thurs? I'll start it off by saying let's meet Wed at 7:00 p.m., but that's just a suggestion. I also suggest we make an exception this week and leave Andrea's ship up for one more week if it's still looking good.

Thanks for posting Dave.

That's exactly as I was thinking. That panel does not haver any sprinklers above it, and thus, has not run at all.

Its a great piece for all of the visitors to Tacoma to see. Frost Park Chalk Off's contribution to the Tall Ships event.

I guess I’ll figure on doing my best to show up at 7 tonight (Wednesday) with buckets, if anyone can make it to help.

I'll stop by after heading to Two Vaults at 6pm. See you tonight!

Good plan – I have a handful of friends with pieces in that show I’d like to check out. Thanks for reminding me.

This week my plan is to go to the park after the glass-blowing event tonight (7/9), which is scheduled to end 7-ish, to wash the chalk remnants to get ready for Friday. If it works out for anyone else to also help afterwards, that would be cool. And quick.

Thanks Dave. Perhaps challengers that help clean up the park should get some extra votes on Friday.

Thanks to Kevin (again) and Mandi and my kids for helping me wash the chalk last night after the Hilltop glass-blowing event. Chalkies sure know how do lay down some serious thickness and color these days.

Nice. I just drove by there and the place was clean.

Ready for a good event tomorrow.

[Perhaps there's a better forum section for this, but... ]
Another week, another chalk-cleaning needed at Frost Park. Per request, this week's washing will be Wednesday, 7/16, 7:00p.m. I'll try to bring a couple brushes and buckets again. (It would be neat to have a freindly place nearby to stash them week-to-week.)

by Erik
on 7/15/2008 @ 12:12pm
Great. Thanks Dave.

Hopefully, we will get some more people to show up.

I'll split my time that evening folding cranes with Droid116 and helping clean.

(pst... Mr. Droid's folding party is during lunch, not in the evening... unless you have other folding-related plans)

On the other hand, Kevin has helped clean the chalk for the last two weeks. I'd prefer he take a break tonight and sit in Tollefson Plaza doing origami. I’ll bring some good origami paper.

by izenmania
on 7/16/2008 @ 4:29pm
If you bring paper he can sit in Frost Park while other people clean?

I'll be there tonight, though without any implements of my own.

by Erik
on 7/16/2008 @ 4:37pm
Paddy Coynes is right near by.

Somehow we need to work in some more fun with the cleaning of Frost Park. Sunny day. Right downtown.

on 7/16/2008 @ 4:51pm
I'm planning on helping out tonight, though I also lack in implements of my own. If I don't show up right at seven, it means I had some kind of delay of the bus variety.

Afterward, however, I may have to head out immediately, and not join any after-cleaning shindig Erik seems to be hinting at. I've got some work I need to finish.

by KevinFreitas
on 7/16/2008 @ 4:59pm
I'll be there with a brush and bucket or two. Can't stick around for the after 'cause the party is online already gaming with my buddies.

Cheers!

Allow me! A new bucket for monsieur...
I'll bring the two Frost Park buckets and brushes. Sounds like a good turnout tonight! Some other week maybe PC, PSP, McC or TRH afterwards? We do need some new twists to this event to make it more fun. But we have only begun making up the rules for this. One rule seems to be since we're doing the washing, if on occasion have reason to leave some drawing up for one more week, we do.

by izenmania
on 7/16/2008 @ 6:07pm
Erg. Never mind, can't make it tonight. Sorry dudes.

CHALK-CLEANING IN PREPARATION FOR 7/25:
As owner and operator of the two little FT buckets and brushes, I find myself busy Wed and Thurs this week at the usual clean-up time. But today is better, if I move the time up. So if any chalkies can help (and balance out your Karma at the same time), I'll clean the chalk tonight (Wed, 7/23) at 6:00 p.m. (1800 hrs.) There are a lot of scattered works to clean this week. And one I want to leave up. And maybe a spirit or two to let be.

I will be in the area and will stop by. Cya Dave

We owe a thanks to Kevin (for the fourth week in a row) for arriving to help wash last week’s chalk, and Dawn, who also showed up again. Next time you eat at India Mahal please thank the gentleman there, too – The fountain was dry again and he let us fill our two buckets from his mop-sink. Actually, we got the most mileage out of the least amount of water ever – We only used those two small bucket-fulls.

Next time push top button (#300) at 811 Pacific and I'll buzz you in - I have a spigot just inside the door on Pacific.

by Dave_L
on 7/30/2008 @ 6:56pm
Wow, Thanks! Noted! (I hope you don't get a bunch of FT readers buzzing all the time seeking water now.) BTW, at this second I'm heading to the park to wash, ETA 7:15, if anyone's nearby to help. But it should be really easy today, so no worries..

on 8/6/2008 @ 5:13pm
Where did the day go... O.K., if anyone wants to help clean the chalk tonight (8/6) in preparation for Friday... I won't make 6:00 so let's say 6:30 at FP. Kevin, you had a week off, but you did four weeks straight, so you don't have to. Plus, you do did a tiny picture. Should go quickly today.

Aw crap, too late again. Already at home. I'm there next week. Thanks to Dave and anyone else that shows.

Sorry I wasn't home to let people in for water - I was at the Y.

Sorry I wasn't home to let people in for water - I was at the Y.

From what I heard, the fountains were full with water and working.

However, Dave L. cleaned all of Frost Park BY HIMSELF, and thus, is a hero!!!

Thank you Dave. You are a weekly hero.

Indeed he is!

by Dave_L
on 8/7/2008 @ 8:39am
Thanks - it was easy this week. And Erik bought me a beverage afterwards in appreciation. (I have to mention to one newer participant not to use the oil pastels; I couldn't scrub one off, and might have to try another method.) And no prob, Scout, fountains were full and it is nice knowing you're usually available to open the door. Shooting for Wednesdays, gives one more day in case everything goes awry. India Mahal lets us use his mop-sink, too, but I hate interrupting them and their customers.
OH – Let me edit and add: A nice couple was walking up the hill and had sympathy on me for having to clean the walls. I explained that it was okay, and told them what the event was all about. I think they’re on-board as fans, now!

8/13/08 - Time to clean last week’s chalk. If anyone wants to help, I’ll bring the two Frost Park buckets and brushes at 6pm tonight (Wednesday). If I get stuck at the office and start running late, I’ll re-post.

by scout
on 8/13/2008 @ 12:28pm
Is anything left? A lot was washed away by the rain. I will go work out early because I am a studette, albeit a very old one, then be back by 6 to help and provide water.

by Erik
on 8/13/2008 @ 1:41pm
Thanks Dave.

However, there are pressure washer guys out there now.

I suspect there will be nothing to clean. I will walk through there later today.

by Dave_L
on 8/13/2008 @ 2:20pm
O.K., maybe it's alright, then. The sidewalk is probably clean, but the wall surfaces usually remain mostly intact. But if pressure-wash guys are there, it might be O.K. Let's call the whole thing off... Let me know, Erik, or I'll just check it out tonight. If there's anything left, I'll get it, or try again tomorrow. I'm grateful yet curious about the pressure washing guys, though. Do you think there's an ussue there?

by Dave_L
on 8/27/2008 @ 2:57pm
8/27:
A small, used, electric pressure washer has been located for sale by some FT members, and is available for the next few days for $65. Are any chalkers interested in pitching in to purchase a Frost Park pressure washer for an occasional concrete deep-clean? So far $20 has been pledged for its purchase.

(I got last week, and I’m going to try to bucket clean the walls tonight – I just can’t say what time yet).

by scout
on 8/27/2008 @ 3:02pm
I think I'll be home by 6 pm if you need water.

I will pledge $17.77 if you can find a place to store it downtown.

I just sent the seller an email with our interest in purchasing. Let's see what he comes back with. Oh, btw, I offered to barter some of our glorious talents in exchange. So you liberal black chalk users, who love to go vertical (you know who you are), may have to ani up on some art crap if he goes for it. He, he, we'll see. It still a great deal, without the negotiations.

by dawntown

Oh, I can donate $2.53.

If everyone did who goes out to the park on Fridays...

by Dave_L
on 8/27/2008 @ 5:06pm
Wow, a great response.
I'm going to shoot for 6pm tonight to bring the buckets and clean the remaining walls. (Don't rush home, Scout - If the fountains are dry, I'll wait.)

I've got one (1) extra Gold Club ticket to the Rainiers Game tonight for anyone who shows up, Tacoma vs. Sacramento.

by beerandhotdogs

Red Hot will donate $20, I just need someone to come pick it up.

For the weekly chalk washing, my schedule’s been too unpredictable the last few weeks to announce, so I’ve been cleaning odd hours. But tonight I will try to get there at 6:00 with buckets and brushes if anyone wants to help. IF the fountains are dry, I’ll knock on Scout’s door to see if Scout’s home. (If my schedule goes sideways before then, I’ll re-post.) Might leave a few up again this week – they look nice when going down Pacific.
Thanks for the generos offers on the Frost park pressure washer. But it turns out the pressure washer needs minimum psi from a hose and will not draw from a raw water so I need to check if there’s even a water spigot that’s accessible.

by Erik
on 9/11/2008 @ 4:07pm
Hmmmm. How does the BIA pull it off?

by scout
on 9/11/2008 @ 7:24pm
The BIA uses my water spigots at least once a year - one in the back of my building and one in the front.

by Mandiferous
on 9/12/2008 @ 8:26am
Luckily, the fountain was on last night and Dave and I had the place cleaned up in about 20 minutes.

It's amazing how gross that park gets each week. Random trash, cigarette butts, a hamburger bun floating in the fountain....

I wish they'd put a couple of those butt cans around the park. Might make a difference.

by dawntown
on 9/12/2008 @ 8:33am
Yes, I was a bit disappointed by this fact that the pressure washer indeed needed some psi to work properly. I hate to say this, but truthfully, if we had access to a water spigot, then we don't need the pressure washer, just a long hose and a $8 pistol handle. If bought new, could price well under $60. But I realize pressure washer is more FUN to use, though.

If we could get access to a spigot, then all this will not be in vain.

Anybody have suggestions to whome to talk to

by NineInchNachos
on 9/12/2008 @ 8:59am
I think there is a spigot hidden under the water of one of the fountain tanks.

Yep. You are right.

Thanks to Dawn's tip, I purchased the pressure washer anyway, becuase I had burned one out last year. So if we find a way to use it and want to experiment, or do a deep scrub once in a while, it's available.
Anyway, thanks to Mandi for coming down to clean the chalk last night. She came and she cleaned - then I sent her away. Mandi had it pretty much done by the time I got there. Yeah, we usually pick up a bucket-full of trash - mostly food wrappers and food. Didn't pick up the 100's of cigarette butts, though.
