What happened to the street parking?

Trying to find some street parking in the area surrounding Tacoma General Hospital I was struck by the extensive used of yellow "permit-only" parking zones in residential zones. I have always been under the impression that these streets were paid for by the taxpayers. Apparently, now that TG offers Valet parking, they don't want to compete with any other-wise free and equally convienent competition.

Yea, especially with construction parking is pretty brutal around there. If I'm anywhere within a 3 block radius I'll just grab one and hike the rest of the way in. Either that or I'll buy me a Smart ForTwo and park in any available half spots.

Yes, overuse of the "permit only" parking areas is bad because it reduced the pool of available parking and the areas are often vastly underutilized.
