Looking for a Bookcase
|
by izenmania on 9/4/2008 @ 11:25am |
I am, as you might guess, looking for a bookcase. I have more books than shelves. Neither Target nor Fred Meyer (both of which are close to me) have the size that I am looking for, and I'd rather avoid Ikea for a variety of reasons.
So, if anyone either has one they are trying to get rid of, or can recommend a good local place where I could peruse such furniture items, it would prove most helpful. Thankee! |

Other than that, Harkness on South Tacoma Way (south of 56th) is nothing to sneeze at, with decent pricing. |
by Dave_L on 9/4/2008 @ 12:23pm | Are you looking for a bookcase?
What requirements/preferences do you have? Utilitarian/functional, or nice-looking? Even the office Max/Depot places have stuff, but anything decent get's expensive. But some look decent at 10-ft away. Van Dykes Restorers vandykes.resultspage.com/search?w=bookca... has okay barrister book case units, but for the quantity you'd need, it would be a lot of money. Would it be possible in your situation to install rows of built-in shelves, perhaps with simple shelf-bracket hardware screwed into the framing? You need to install a rolling library ladder - I always thought that would be cool. www.putnamrollingladder.com/ www.rockler.com/product.cfm?Offerings_ID... |

The appearance isn't all that important. I just need it to be pretty sturdy, as it will be full of comic books, which are pretty densely packed, and the rest of my hardcovers. And I don't need anything huge. Probably five feet high and maybe four or five feet wide would do? I'll probably scope out Office [whatever] over by Target next, since it's nearby. |

It's next to Tacoma Boys, and they have different sizes to choose from. Apparently they also have finished stuff now if you're not into adding your personal touches. |
by Dave_L on 9/4/2008 @ 2:07pm | That seems to be a normal size - I've looked at them at Office(fill in the blank) and Target and Walmart but never did buy one. (Just bought a bunch of magazine holders) Back when I was looking, Offive Max had a nice shelf on sale. It's just a pain checking the usual places, though I suppose most of them are on-line.
www.officemax.com/omax/catalog/productLi... I'll have to check out the other suggestions, too. |
by Mandiferous on 9/4/2008 @ 2:19pm | Habitat's Re-Store had a few the last time I was there.

by izenmania on 9/4/2008 @ 2:24pm | InTacoma also suggested scoping out antique row. |
by Mandiferous on 9/4/2008 @ 2:29pm | Meh. I have mixed feelings about those shops. Just because something is old, doesn't automatically mean it's valuable. Granted, they don't make a lot of things as sturdy as they used to, but c'mon.

by intacoma on 9/4/2008 @ 2:38pm | no one said it had to be valuable |
by jcbetty on 9/4/2008 @ 2:38pm | ...and actually, I've found some pretty worthless, non-sturdy items called "antiques". I'd check out garage sales and Craig's list, or put this request there? Somebody might have something... |
by intacoma on 9/4/2008 @ 3:01pm | and while your at it why not even hitup random back alleys, your local gulch, and or carve one out of a tree |
