Anyone dodge the rain drops and make it out to the Taste of Tacoma this weekend? We've been in years past and really enjoyed ourselves but couldn't get out there this time around. Do share...

An interesting observation they mentioned was that they were amazed at the size of the portions served at the event.
There has been a lot of press as of late about a dramatic increase in the incidence of obesity in the American population.
We do seem to like things large - SUVs, portions,,, houses.
Is it time for us as a society to look at the cumulative effect our appetites for living large is having on our individual psyches, bodies, and how we appropriate our natural resources on the planet...? Just an observation.... |

Most of us take more from society than we give. This, I believe, is the root of most socio-politico-economic issues in this country.
On a parallel note, those who fall into poverty are forced to watch all of those who rabidly over-consume their way around town. Greed.. jealousy.. status.. resentment.. want.. need.. CRIME. |

That's why it is good to be a downtown dweller rather than a communting suburbanite. By hunkering down at Matador, a block away from your home, you are saving the planet. |

This year it seemed like there were more $2 tastes, or maybe there was just more money in my pocket. Regardless, it's breathtaking how much it costs to take a family to that festival. (There was a coffee booth, not naming names, charging $6 for a beverage that's 3.50 at their stores)
We really enjoyed Summerfest at Fort Steilacoom last year (didn't make it there this year) they have a kids zone where you pay one admission and then all of the kids stuff is paid for. This also makes for a lot less standing in line.
I wasn't feeling well and mostly ate every fresh berry-thing I saw. I think if you avoid the mounds of fried stuff there are some less shocking portions. Plus, berries are in season and actually local. |
