Food Fight - Say Chowder!
on 5/21/2013 @ 11:19am
|A friend recently tweeted about her "meh" chowder experience in Old Town Tacoma's Spar. So, I ask for her and all Destiny City chowder lovers (and since the weather has apparently turned a bit back to chowder weather), where's your fav bowl in Tacoma and why?

|It's a been a good, long while but I used to love me some Duke's chowder in a sourdough bread bowl just never got down there much 'cause it always seemed a bit expensive.|

|I can't think of a great chowder in Tacoma, though I haven't tried much. Duke's is absolutely in the "overpriced" category, and relatively mediocre.|
Call me a traitor to T-Town, but Pike Place Chowder is pretty much the best thing ever. Worth a ride up I-5 on the 590/594.

|Yeah, my favorite overall comes from Tokeland so I really am curious if there's a Tacoma stand-out that eludes me.|
I like a chowder that's the right balance of creamy (but not too heavy) with equal parts fresh clam and potato. Don't skimp on the clam and use the potato as a filler! Add in a nice bit of salt and garlic and I think that's a good start.

|It's not a mainstay on their menu but Doyles' does have a pretty decent chowder when it's available.|

|Ivar's across from TCC. It's fast food, but it's tasty chowder. The Met & Safeway are great too. 'SNOW'S' in a can works also. I feel like many restaurants serve pre made chowder from a food service purveyor.|

|My experience at The Spar led to a conversation with the BF that we need to locate the best non-chain restaurant clam chowder in Tacoma. My current favorite is the chowder in a bread bowl from Anthony's at Point Defiance, but alas, it's a chain. I shall continue my search!

|My favorite chowder in Tacoma has to be at Ivar's. I know it isn't "local" in the sense that you are asking, but there it is.|
My favorite chowder is the seafood chowder at Salty's at Redondo.
My favorite literary chowder is the "Clam or Cod?" (try them both!) chowder at the Try Pots in Moby Dick.
