It’s almost here – that $4-per-gallon gasoline. Actually, if you’re buying premium, it’s already arrived, according to AAA. The average price of a gallon of ethyl in Tacoma hit $4.03 today, up from $4.028 on Monday. The sign above shows that a central Tacoma 7-Eleven is selling a bit below the city's average price for the highest grade, and a bit above the average for regular-grade, which topped out at $3.706 this morning, which is just a hair under the all-time record in Tacoma, set on Sunday, at $3.707. And if Tacoma wasn’t in record territory today, other Washington cities were. Count Bremerton, Olympia, Seattle, Bellevue, Everett, Vancouver and Yakima among the pacesetters. by Erik on 6/23/2008 @ 4:54pm | Yeah, the US economy and oil prices have pretty much followed the Kunstler curve since he came here. Oil prices may drop in the future, but it doesn't look likely we are going to see anything over $2.50 a gallon again. Meanwhile in Tacoma, we are still a bit stuck and cannot build any buildings that do not mandate car use. Tacoma's 1960s building codes are still based on mandatory car use and dollar gas and bar any housing construction unless residents buy a parking space. Worse, the suburban sprawl inducing "cross base highway" is still being pushed and we are expected to pay for it. The same is true there as it is here: nearly half the price paid at the pump results from taxes. The difference is that the Europeans have something to show for it: effective mass transit.

All I know is soon when the gas runs out, it's going to be a good time to be Portland with all their fancy pants light rail. Now there is a city that knows how to build a brawny lady statue  |
