This is our last song...y'all. An Ethnic Fest wrap.

Ethnic fest 2009 at Wright Park was another great Tacoma event.

First off, I got a reward for not taking public transportation, I found a parking spot right next to the park. Then we heard an awesome assembly of musicians. There was a zydeco band, a steel drum band, and Michael Powers jazz trio. My kids were anxious to take a dip in the wading pool like we have every previous year. Alas, some genius park planner had decided one of the improvements needed was the removal of the pool. Now there's just a hot dry spot there which people were avoiding. The flesh on display was pure Tacoma. There was a large assortment of the morbidly obese and bad tattoos. But all in all, I have to admit, that ethnic fest did seem to do a good job of getting different ethnic groups together for a beautiful display of ethnic harmony. Sorry if you missed it.

I didn't take public transportation either... I biked there. I always have fun, since I pretty much know half the vendors personally. It's always nice to get your garlic naan for half price.

Oh, and about the wading pool. Did you read about it on Metro Park's website? That thing was so far out of code that it'd be cheaper to build a new one rather than repair it.
...which is what MPT is planning on doing. It's going to be a sprayground kinda like the ones over at Wapato Hills & Jefferson.

Thorax, thanks for the posting.

I know that there were some issues re: pools but didn't realize this included the wading pools. Jane Clark wading pool is still open so maybe the "code violation" excuse is just a method for the park commissioners to cover their butts when they make an unpopular decision. At any rate, its hard to convince an overheated 6 year old that the wading pool was removed for her own good.

On a side note:

I think this effort to remove all the wading pools and replace them with spray parks is a big...big...big mistake. Both facilities are fun, both will cool off the kids, but the spray parks don't give youngsters the opportunity to learn the basic swimming fundamentals that they will need someday.

Garlic naan?...sounds nasty.
