Earrth Day 2009

Living in harmony with our Earth and lessening our impact on it is an important exercise we should engage in every day. Does anyone have a thought on how we as a society could live a little "greener?"
I would eliminate almost all school busing. More students should be walking or riding bicycles. It would he healthier for them, more friendly to the environment, and the $5M saved from discontinuing the buses could help offset the school funding problems. |
by tacoma1 on 4/22/2009 @ 10:12am | OK, That's one way to do it. Seems a little counter intuitive to me, but if it works, I'd be OK with it.
I think that I would be more inclined to sell all of the school parking lots, and use the money to pay for hybrid buses, bike racks, and operating cost for the buses. |
by seejane on 4/22/2009 @ 10:20am | Don't tax farm land in the Puyallup Valley and add an extra tax on all non farm use of the Puyallup Valley.
It would be both "green" and a matter of good Nat'l Security if more of our produce came from local sources. |
by fredo on 4/22/2009 @ 12:00pm | Counter intuitive, in what way? Buses cause pollution, students are too flabby, and the schools need more funding.
Protect our puyallup valley farmland? Yes, agreed. |

by tacoma1 on 4/22/2009 @ 12:34pm | @ Fredo
Buses cause less pollution and take up less space than all the cars that would be needed to fill the void created without the bus service. If you can force all kids to walk or ride a bike to school (no parents are allowed to drive the little darlings to and fro) then I'm all for it. |
by fredo on 4/22/2009 @ 12:41pm | tacoma1 @ We're in agreement! I never suggested people drive their kids to school.
If we want to students to embrace an eco-friendly lifestyle then let's institutionalize eco-friendly organizational behavior. Kids want to be part of the solution, why don't we let them? |
by Dave_L on 4/22/2009 @ 12:53pm | This may be off-topic, but I went to the Earth Day activities at the zoo. Huge crowds, overflowing parking lot. Upon leaving I could not believe the amount of trash left in the parking lots. I don't mean a wrapper dropped here and there, but it looked like some people emptied out their cars in the parking lot. I guess in a way that shows the eco-unfriendly behavior that keeps breeding. I mean, one doesn't have to be an exrtreminst to mantain a certain amount of common-sense behavior. So I think a little greener attitude would go a long way. I remember when recycling was just taking off. I had some ultra-green friends who insisted that curbside recycling wasn't the answer, becuase people should believe it's the right thing to do, and not mind taking things to a recycling station. It's still an interesting point of view - we need to believe it's the right thing to do. But then again I'm not consistent. I still like going to the races and do things that are not very eco-friendly, and I could take the Sounder to work, but I don't. But a day-to-day shift in behavior and awarness will be good. My daughter tells me about the reduce, reuse, recycle she learns at school, so I hope more of her generation embraces the ideals, rather than dumping their fast food garbage in the parking lot. |
by thriceallamerican on 4/22/2009 @ 1:26pm | Here's what The Daily Show correspondent Lewis Black has to say about "kids want[ing] to be part of the solution". |
by tacoma1 on 4/22/2009 @ 2:14pm | Lewis Black always speaks the f-ng truth.
In support of earth day, I think that I will walk to my neighborhood watering hole, drink some local spirits, and then stagger home. |
by Dave_L on 4/22/2009 @ 3:35pm | ...Just keep the methane emissions down. |
by KevinFreitas on 4/22/2009 @ 4:12pm | I'll ride my bike around for my grocery errands tonight. Happy Earth day everyone! @Tacoma1: Love that idea of ditching the school parking lots for students as well. Replace them with a field or, heck, a big organic garden the produce of which could be used in the cafeteria. |
by tacoma1 on 4/22/2009 @ 4:27pm | Tacoma Public Schools Victory Gardens instead of parking lots........Now were getting somewhere! |
