I'd like to say that Tacoma needs some new blood in the music world. I'd like to propose that we start a weekly jam session at a local coffee shop, someplace where it would be all ages. I am posting this here because to convince the unsuspecting owner that he/she needs to host such an event would be tough by just saying, "host it and people will come." I'm primarily a jazz musician, I play saxophone and piano mostly, but I love all kinds of music.
I think the first step would be to put together a house band. People that are interested, and willing to commit to the weekly time w/o pay probably at first. A solid bass player is a must for the jam to work. A good drummer would be good to have in the house band too. Other rhythm instruments would be cool too, guitar, piano, vibes, keyboard... ect.
All the owner is interested in is bringing people that will buy a few drinks when otherwise they wouldn't be there. So if we could make this work I'd like generate some interest.
The next thing would to scope out a place. I'm thinking that probably Origin 23 on Union and 6th would be a cool place. I've played there before, and the owner is a really nice guy.
As for what music? I'm all ears. Its my opinion that we could play anything. If people are interested in writing tunes, and bringing them in that would be cool. If the jam gets of the ground and a small group of people want to work on a new tune each week, or the house band could create a list for people to sign up for. Anything and everything. If people want reggae, pop, rock, whatever thats cool too.
The thing about Tacoma is that the musicians are there, but the opportunities don't exist. If we had a springboard for getting groups to from and then play in more spaces, then Tacoma will certainly benefit.
Post what you think and perhaps we could get the ball rolling. Definitely post if you are a bass player or drummer interested in being in a band.

I'm one of two emcees at the Victory Music Open Mic held every Tuesday evening 7-1- at the Antique Sandwich Company at 51st & N Pearl. Check us out. We broadcast live on 90.9FM KVTI. It is about as eclectic as it can be. Oh, it's all unplugged too.
