With this Friday being the 4th of July there's lots going on around Tacoma. For the weekly chalk off I beg the question: shall we forge on at Frost Park as usual knowing there may be a distinct lack of work-day related traffic or do we attempt to re-locate for the day down along Ruston or Dock St. somewhere? Likewise, will enough of the regular or potential chalkies be in-town/available?

by izenmania on 6/30/2008 @ 9:51am | I vote that you recreate it elsewhere. That way I don't have to miss my first ever Frost Park lunch since its inception ;)
But seriously... I won't be around, but I think finding a place where it would be more visible to the Tall Ships/Freedom Fair people is a great idea. |

by dawntown on 6/30/2008 @ 10:06am | me too. I should be in town and in the event I am, Ruston seems to be a great area for some performance/chalk art. Maybe next to the guy who rollerskates, should he ever make it through his warm-up and actually do a performance? |

by AP on 6/30/2008 @ 10:32am | By Ruston we mean Ruston Way, right? I wonder what the security at the Freedom Fair would have to say about people chalking out.. |

by droid116 on 6/30/2008 @ 10:43am | I am unfortunately not around on the 4th. Good luck to those who can make it. |

by KevinFreitas on 6/30/2008 @ 10:47am | @AP: I can give a ring over to the event folks to see if they care that we participate and if they can allow us a specific area or if they even care. This sound good to everyone? |

by AngelaJossy on 6/30/2008 @ 11:42am | I'm planning to go down to Ruston Way anyway so I like the idea of seeing everybody down there chalking. Its always a royal pain fighting the crowds down there so I suggest getting permission from the city and forming some sort of barrier around the chalk area. Does anyone have any hazard tape lying around the house? I can just see some inconsiderate oblivious cretin standing on someone's creation while their still trying to create it. |

by tacomachickadee on 6/30/2008 @ 12:12pm | Chalking can happen anytime, anywhere ... but what then happens to the main spark behind the Frost Park Friday lunch gatherings: Putting Frost Park to good use at least once a week. The chalking is bonus, but that's not what it's all about.
A brief argument for ATTEMPTING to keep our lunch date this Friday ... (but understanding that holidays distract us from much) ...
-- Those who work elsewhere during non-holiday days can actually participat without being "sick".
-- Frost Park is easier to get to (Ruston Way is closed during Freedom Fair, parking fills up fast and the dense crowds practically demand a multi-hour committment) ... hmmm ... perhaps my lobbying is more based on crowd fear.
-- With Tall Ships this year, there should be people downtown as well as on Ruston Way.
-- Did I mention the ability to PARK near (or get a bus to and from) Frost Park vs. the Freedom Fair?
-- It's way easier to say "meet at Frost Park ... corner of 9th & Pacific" than try to pinpoint somewhere along Ruston (for instance, I know I've seen the breakdancing dude or rollerskating guy or whomever was mentioned ... but there's no way I could explain to someone where it was ... I'm not that much a Ruston Way regular).
Hmmm ... I think I am having a crowd-phobic moment ... |

Good thoughts.
The percentage of people who simply show up a Frost Park each week to attend the events who don't read the blogs each week is increasing. Its sort of like a small farmers market community type event at this point with many things happening.
No doubt, a lot of people will be there this Friday. The consistency of having the same place and time is very important to make the event dependable like Farmers Market.
With that said, with Tall Ships events going on and other activities, this Friday may just be a gathering and community chalking, lunching without a formal competitive episode. I don't think I will line up a sponsor for this week.
However, with the open source nature of Frost Park activities and the blogosphere, who knows what will happen.
Sudden death chalk off between competitors? A community monster chalking piece covering the entire park? Free style chalking? A boating fest int he fountains led by Dave L.?
One also never knows what RR Anderson will send through the blogosphere and list serve Thursday night, if anything, that he plans. |

by KevinFreitas on 6/30/2008 @ 1:12pm | @chickadee: You actually have me convinced. Sorry to change my tune but I'm going to see Frost Park this Friday as a break from the wonderful madness that will surely be Ruston Way and Tall Ships. Maybe since there won't be any prize pressure I'll lay some color down... |

by tacomachickadee on 6/30/2008 @ 1:28pm | I'll bring cookies! |

Dessert fest!!!!1! |

by AngelaJossy on 6/30/2008 @ 2:26pm | Sounds good to me. Viva la revolution! On Frost Park we stand! Maybe we'll scooter on down to Ruston Way afterward. |

by KevinFreitas on 6/30/2008 @ 3:01pm | Ooo, that'd be a nice transition. I'm down with the scooter post-Frost Park scooter processional. Might have to figure out some kind of sweet treat I can bring to the park as well. |

by jenyum on 6/30/2008 @ 6:30pm | Frost Park sounds like a good plan, but if you are still considering another location there's an enormous space for such a thing at Owen Beach. Lots and lots of cement by the picnic tables, and I'm sure the beach will be crowded on the 4th but not nearly as insane as Ruston Way. |

by Courtney on 6/30/2008 @ 8:33pm | Personally, I would prefer Frost Park for all the reasons that Tacoma Chickadee mentioned. With two little ones too it would be easier for us. I know we have plans soon after so dealing with any kind of Ruston Way, Pt Defiance traffic would rule me out. Sto however, would probably show up anywhere :). |

by tacomachickadee on 6/30/2008 @ 8:39pm | Frost Park will be populated at noon Friday, one way or another.
A different mix for sure, as some regulars can't make it and I know some never-make-its are anxious to finally get the chance.
And I like the "dessert fest" idea ... I make a mean chocolate chip cookie. Anyone else in on snacky potluck?
See you Friday! |

Yep. Its a public park and right adjacent to a lot of people who still are going to be working downtown.
RR Anderson still has not weighed in on this yet. Hmmmmm. Perhaps he will just do so on Thursday night through the art list serve.
All I can say is keep your chalking supplies and desserts at the ready. |

by tacomachickadee on 7/1/2008 @ 7:05am | I'm guessing RR is about to be a wee bit extra busy for a few weeks. So if per chance he is otherwise distracted, for a week or two or 10, he's taught us well ... we grasshoppers can bridge the gap. We know the drill.
I'd make a Jedi reference now, but it's just too early in the day ... *insert Jedi joke here*

"Make sidewalk art we will, hmm?"
