CASI Chili Cook-Off at Freighthouse Square

Red & Green Chili Cook-Off Competition

Join Us for the Red and Green Chili Cook-Off March 15

Do you love to eat chili? Looking for new chili recipes to try? Want to have some fun for the whole family? Come join us for the CASI Chili Cook-Off at Freighthouse Square in Tacoma WA on March 15, 2008 from 11 am – 6pm.

The Chili Appreciation Society International (CASI) is a group of chili cooks that have raised chili awareness to tens of thousands of people worldwide. Along the way they have raised over a million dollars (in 2007) that have benefited many local and national charitable organizations.

The Puget Pod, which is the local arm of CASI in the Northwest, is hosting this year’s St. Patrick’s Day Red and Green chili cook-off. The Red and Green Chili Cook-Off is a CASI sanctioned chili cooking competition, with points and prizes awarded to the winning chili cook in both the red and green chili categories. Each spoon of chili is judged using 5 criteria: aroma, red color, consistency, taste and aftertaste. Scoring is from 0 to 10, with 10 being the highest.

Samples of the individual cooks’ chili will be available to the public– all the samples you can eat for $5 per person! There are also a number of activities happening around the Square that day, including a Kids’ Kraft Zone, “Cowboy Cookies” at TostaCaffe, a beer garden, and live music and entertainment. This event is fun for the whole family.

All proceeds will go to My Sister’s Pantry food bank in Tacoma WA. You can also bring a canned food item to receive special discounts at participating Freighthouse Square Merchants!

If you want to taste some great chili and learn how to make a real pot of Texas Red… put March 15th on your calendar!

If you are interested in becoming a cook or judge you can contact Ken at or give him a call at 253-537-4591. The Puget Pod web site has some great chili recipes and their 2008 calendar with a list of events where they will be cooking in our area.
