Talk on Port Militarization Resistance

United for Peace of Pierce County presents Joe La Sac speaking on Port Militarization Resistance as a free speech issue. La Sac is an independent journalist and student at the University of Puget Sound. While videotaping on the Puyallup River mudflats, he was stopped by a Tacoma police officer. La Sac became an instant cause célèbre for the issue of free speech with the questions that arose due to his videotaping and the internet posting of the incident during the Tacoma Port Militarization Resistance. He has been studying the ways independent media can be most effective in getting out messages and information neglected by mainstream media and how new media plays an important role in building a democratic society.

Joe La Sac is a senior economics and philosophy student at UPS. He is active in Students for a Democratic Society (SDS) and Praxis Imago, a student media/ education organization. He also works with Seattle-based Indymedia Presents, a video collective, and as a part-time instructional technology consultant for UPS. The event is sponsored by United for Peace of Pierce County.
