Mark Matthews Book Talk

Matthews will talk about his new book A Great Day to Fight Fire: Mann Gulch, 1949. The book chronicles the tragic Montana wildfire focusing the perspective on the men who fought it. Sixteen men fought the fire, but only three survived. The fire provoked the US Forest Service to develop safety equipment and training programs for this still-dangerous profession.

Mark Matthews is the author of Smoke Jumping on the Western Fire Line: Conscientious Objectors during World War II. He is a former wildland firefighter for the US Forest Service and a former forestry technician for the Lolo National Forest.
