Banned Film Night

We'll be showing two films - one about censorship, one that has been banned.

7 pm * The Front (1976). Woody Allen plays a cashier and small-time bookie who lends his name to several writer friends blacklisted by the House Committee on Un-American Activities. In doing so, he becomes a famous television writer. A humorous and interesting look at a dark time.

9 pm * Maedchen in Uniform (1932). A beautifully shot German film set in an all-girl boarding school. The film was banned and burned by Hitler because of its portrayal of a revolt against authoritarianism and a pro-lesbian storyline. It was banned in the US until Eleanor Roosevelt lifted the ban. A forgotten classic.
