Frost Park Chalk Off

Season 4, Episode 6

Come down to Frost Park and get your chalk off on! This weekly community art-in-action is open to all who want to chalk, snap photos, or just come by to enjoy their lunch and meet other Tacoma-types.

Voted Winner of the contest will receive a limited edition Vote Boe Boater Hat, a $25 gift certificate to a Frost Park 'local' of their choice (which means either Dorky’s, Hal of a Sub, or Paddy Coynes I guess), recognition/presentation at the Vote Boe Campaign Kick-off on the 11th of May 2011 at the Foss Waterway Seaport, AND the opportunity of their artwork to be incorporated into the Vote Boe Campaign Lit Propaganda.

Ok I love what you did Brian the bridge is awesome but......

I vote for Ariel.

Happy Mothers Day!

on 5/6/2011 @ 1:57pm
I think Brain and Stowe should be disqualified for being way to AWESOME! Just kidding. However I'm Casting my Vote For Mark's SunTiki. There's just something about that little guy that makes me happy :D

by smeall
on 5/6/2011 @ 1:58pm
I vote for stowe because I was watching Thor during the chalk off.

by Joel 413
on 5/6/2011 @ 2:01pm
I vote Thorax!

Gotta love me some Taft.

by ensie
on 5/6/2011 @ 2:08pm
Whoa. That Thor is awesome. But I gotta go Ariel for the mother theme.

by AnagramPress
on 5/6/2011 @ 2:10pm
Oh, this choice is way too difficult to make!

While I absolutely love Thorax's ode to Uncle Jumbo, I'm going to have to vote for Stowe's Thor. Which is fan-bleeding-tastic.

by Lance Kagey
on 5/6/2011 @ 2:10pm
You know that Taft's bathtub is actually located in Federal Way. you'll have to have Tom Llewellyn tell you the whole story. very interesting.

by wildcelticrose
on 5/6/2011 @ 2:10pm
There are a LOT of truly GREAT entries.

But I'm going to have to go with Mark for chalking Boe's head; very creative use of medium.

by NineInchNachos
on 5/6/2011 @ 2:17pm
remember to use word VOTE in your vote!

I vote for spirit capture UNITY and the mangled octopus of a handshake... just kidding! I vote for POLITICAL THOR !

by jamesstoweart
on 5/6/2011 @ 2:22pm
I have to vote for BOE. (Really surprised that joke hadn't happened yet... seriously) After voting for Boe I am going to vote for Brian. Not only did he offer me space on the wall after I stumbled in 20 minutes late. He was well established into his awesome gorge mural by then and could have easily denied me any room, let alone allowed me to encroach as far as I did into his artwork. Brian also shared chalk of all size and shape with me after I discovered that I was not only late but also woefully unprepared. Thanks Brian, you are, in my humble opinion, King of Frost Park. You rule with a kind and just chalking hand.

Also, VOTE BOE!

And SEE THOR!

And don't forget to stop into COMIC BOOK INK for FREE COMICS tomorrow!

by Lance Kagey
on 5/6/2011 @ 2:27pm
I like your thinking Stowe. I vote Boe and Brian. Boe for city council and Brian for chalk king.

by Erik
on 5/6/2011 @ 2:27pm
Perhaps the best entries of the year.

Incredible.

Brian's Julian Beever 3 D piece takes the day though!

Monlux's piece on Boe's head almost looks Photoshopped.

VOTE BOE!

by shanana
on 5/6/2011 @ 2:54pm
Okay I really like the Suntiki too, but I am going to vote for Stowe's THOR!

by Bjr
on 5/6/2011 @ 3:07pm
What a awesome day to chalk Mark you brought the best SunTiki ever and Ariel those colors were amazing . This is how are side walk needs to look every Friday . Most of all I had a blast chalking with Stowe and trying to save part of my piece while chalking under him then he hamerd a lightning bolt into my clouds seeming that I egged him on . Crazy we chalked across each other several times . Good times Chalk-N.

by Erik
on 5/6/2011 @ 3:23pm
Kevin really caught some intense chalking action out there!

by NineInchNachos

does this help?

by Bjr
on 5/6/2011 @ 3:50pm
After seeing the pics by Darkain I got to say now you can see what I see . And most of all Stowe this is the best use of backround and blending Thor just seemed to fit in the clouds with awesome lightning ,time flying by freaky cool green skull with bright yellow eyes and the amazing phonebooth this is action packed. I`ve waited two years to draw this canyon and rope bridge what a awesome way to pull it alltogether. So I will vote Stbowe. I vote Stowe.

by Mark Monlux
on 5/6/2011 @ 4:08pm
While it didn't go with today's them I was motivated to draw a sun tiki because I WANT MORE SUN! A vote for Sun Tiki is a vote for a brighter, sunnier future.

I vote for Sun Tiki

and of course I vote for Boe.

Love Brian's bridge.
I like Thor, but I would have liked it better if it wasn't the movie-ish version - that tends to ruin things in my eyes. Maybe something more awesome from years ago and steeped with more mythology would have looked cooler.

That being said, I vote for T-A-F-T!
Err, I mean I vote for ME.

by L.S.Erhardt
on 5/6/2011 @ 4:15pm
I would have liked something more like this:

by Frinklin
on 5/6/2011 @ 4:16pm
There was only 1 piece that featured Thor. That is automatically the winner. My vote goes to Stowe

by jamesstoweart
on 5/6/2011 @ 4:18pm
The only THOR for me is MARVEL THOR!

No offense to imaginary viking storm gods that may be viewing this from a wifi hotspot in Asgard.

by NineInchNachos
on 5/6/2011 @ 4:32pm
Jack Kirby would be proud.

it was electrifying to see Stowe and Brian's murals eat into each other like spreading skin cancer... but lovely.

people on the streets could sense something powerful happening..

so fun..

WE ALL WIN!

by Kaosmstrss
on 5/6/2011 @ 8:18pm
I LOVED all the art work and Thor has my heart, but you gotta give mad props to all the Mothers out there! I Vote Rebecca (that's my name to he who forgot it... don't worry, you're still shiny) and Ariel's Mother's Day Goddess!

by jenyum
on 5/6/2011 @ 8:29pm
Woah. We all win, because we get this art for free! That is an absolutely incredible Stowe/Brian mash up, but I have to vote for Arial this week for her beautiful tribute to teh mamas.

by KevinFreitas
on 5/6/2011 @ 8:57pm
Wow, so much chalk awesomeness! Adam's CyBOErg is great and I totally dug John's Cthulu. Tub Taft by Thorax is hilarious but the same goes for RR's Boe/Traveler piece. I love the sweetness of Poppy's Mother's Day message and Becky (sorry, I suck with names the first time I meet someone) and Ariel's epic tribute to all the beautiful mothers out there. Joe's understated but stately BOEter hat is also solid. Monlux's tiki jumped off the sidewalk but the energy flowing between Brian and Stowe was, in my humble opinion, what Frost Park is all about. Between them, however Stowe just edged Brian out so I vote Stowe this week.

Thanks everyone for a memorable episode and to David Boe for sponsoring and participating!

by chaosborn
on 5/6/2011 @ 9:04pm
They are all pretty sweet but gonna have to go with Ariel's.

Happy Mothers Day Moms!!

Damn, I missed the polls....again. Had I not, I would have voted for Stowe. That fresco of Thor is positively epic.

by Joel 413
on 5/7/2011 @ 8:40am
This is a weep where technicalities come into play, I will let the community work it out.... Here are the results.

Ariel and Becky 7 + 2 go withs
Stowe 7
Brian 5
Monlux 2 + 1 go with
Thorax o'toole 2
Poppy 2
John 1

Please remember to use the word VOTE when casting your ballot

by Joel 413
on 5/7/2011 @ 8:43am
Also, a huge shout out to the chalkies and CLAW folks who had entries in the 72 hour film fest. And to Antrea T's crew for having a scene UNDER a pier, the only film to do so! It was bad ass.

by ALT
on 5/7/2011 @ 9:29am
Tricky call between Stowe and Ariel and Becky. But, the two "go with's" make a reasonable tie breaker.

Thanks Joel! I didn't even realize that myself. Good to know we had exhibited at least one aspect of originality! :P I thought this year's film festival was the strongest showing yet. In previous years, I found the viewing party to drag in areas - not at all the case this year. Such incredible submissions! It was absolutely entertaining from beginning to end.

It's been movie mania for me these past few days; Yesterday I was driving back from Pasco, WA after attending a viewing party for a film I worked on (art direction), and so I missed the Chalk Off. But - weather permitting - I plan on participating in the next one. :)

by Erik
on 5/7/2011 @ 11:31am
Perhaps the best episode of the season. "Go withs" are not technically votes. But they have traditionally been strong indicators of voter intent far stronger than someone simply liking a drawing.

On the other hand, perhaps there is simply a "tie" and the winners could split the proceeds.

by jamesstoweart
on 5/7/2011 @ 12:24pm
I'd be happy to concede to Ariel and Becky. 'Go Withs' are close enough to votes for me. Ariel and Becky are the winner!

Way to go Moms!

by boearc
on 5/8/2011 @ 1:20pm
Given the tight contest and potential voting controversy - how about Ariel and Becky receive the $25 gift certificate with Stowe getting the artwork incorporation (some how) into the Vote Boe Campaign? Thanks all for the participation (now I only wish Mark had not used permanent pastels - oh well, good thing I have a hat). See you all on the 11th down at the Foss Waterway Seaport.
