Talk on Obedience

How Torture and War Crimes Happen

Veterans for Peace presents a talk on Obedience: How Torture and War Crimes Happen. The talk will focus on two psychological experiments that reveal man's inhumanity to man. The first, in the late 1950s, was an attempt to study why a "good German" would commit war crimes. In the experiment volunteers gave (simulated) electric shocks to other volunteers as the authority figure in a lab coat instructed them to. The second experiment, in the 1970s, involved volunteers in a prison environment - half were prisoners, half were guards. The experiment spun quickly out of control, with the 'guards' subjecting the 'prisoners' to mental and physical abuse.

Veterans For Peace is a national organization with chapters around the country, including Tacoma. They draw on their personal experiences and perspective gained as veterans to raise public awareness of the true costs and consequences of militarism and war - and to seek, and encourage, the search for peaceful, effective alternatives to war.
