Shaun White to visit Tacoma: Inspiring Healthy Youth

MultiCare's annual Do Something Healthy fitness fair

If you could ask snowboarder Shaun White a question, what would it be? How would you like to hear him answer in person?

The not-for-profit MultiCare Health System will bring the two-time Olympic gold medalist and 10-time X-Games gold medalist to Western Washington to answer questions from kids and inspire them to lead a healthy lifestyle.

After competing in the Winter X Games in January, the 24-year-old White will head to Tacoma to speak Feb. 8 at MultiCare’s 11th annual Do Something Healthy celebration, “Reaching for the Gold – Inspiring Healthy Youth.”

With health screenings and interactive booths for the whole family, the fitness fair runs from 5:30 to 9 p.m. Feb. 8 at the Greater Tacoma Convention & Trade Center.

“I try to encourage kids to enjoy themselves: Work hard in school and fulfill your responsibilities, but also play hard,” White said ahead of his visit to Tacoma. “Have fun, go outside and challenge yourself physically.”

Fifty youths between the ages of 6-18 who register for the event before Feb. 1 will be chosen in a random drawing to meet White and get an autograph. (Sorry, no public autograph signing.)

White will then answer pre-submitted questions from kids during a conversation with emcee John Curley.

The health fair also is meant to draw attention to the Million Minute Mission School Challenge, which kicks off Feb. 8 and runs through June 1.

The goal of the Million Minute Mission is to help combat the increasing rates of obesity, diabetes, heart disease, and stroke in Pierce County by promoting a physically active lifestyle.

MultiCare Health System will award four $1,000 prizes to schools in Pierce County that are participating in the Million Minute Mission School Challenge.

Childhood obesity in the U.S. has more than tripled in the past 30 years. The prevalence of obesity among children ages 6 to 11 increased from 6.5 percent in 1980 to 19.6 percent in 2008, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The Million Minute Mission is a community-wide fitness event designed to promote a physically active lifestyle for residents of Pierce County. Spearheaded by the MultiCare Center For Healthy Living, Million Minute Mission is part of Pierce County Gets Fit, a collaborative health initiative designed by MultiCare, the YMCA of Tacoma-Pierce County, and the Tacoma-Pierce County Health Department to improve the fitness and health of our community. The goal of the Million Minute Mission is for children and adults to collectively log millions of minutes worth of physical activity over a four-month period. They aim for 30 to 60 minutes of physical activity on five or more days of the week, and record their minutes online to watch the time add up. For details, visit www.multicare.org/mission.

White won gold medals in the snowboarding halfpipe at the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin, Italy, and at the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver, B.C. He set an Olympic record in Vancouver when he completed his performance with Double McTwist 1260 – a front flip and a back flip while spinning around three and a half times.

“I think healthy living is about making small changes and not about completely and suddenly altering one’s lifestyle and habits,” White said. “A lot of people say, ‘Starting today, I am going to no longer eat this or that,’ but when you make a drastic change, I think it’s harder to maintain. I choose to make subtle changes to my diet and make a plan to work out more often than I previously did.

“Other changes I make include not finishing all the food on my plate to manage portion size, choosing a restaurant that offers multiple healthy food options and eating at home,” White said. “Also, making a healthy breakfast to start my day is key.”
