Wake Up for Wapato

Instead of hitting the snooze button “Wake Up for Wapato” and join the Friends of Wapato Lake from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 9, at the Wapato Lake bathhouse, 6802 S. Sheridan Ave., Tacoma.

Discover how we all can play a part in restoring this community treasure while participating in fun hands-on activities that demonstrate the work that’s being done at the lake.

  • Take a boat ride with UW Tacoma Environmental Program students to discover more about the lake’s natural processes.

  • Visit with agencies and nonprofit organizations that are working together to develop a long-term lake management plan.

  • Participate in a water monitoring sample session.

  • Join a planting, weeding or litter control crew.

Friends of Wapato Lake, neighbors, students from the University of Washington Environmental Sciences Program, Citizen’s for a Healthy Bay and a host of lake enthusiasts will be on hand, along with Metro Parks and the City of Tacoma, as part of a comprehensive community effort to restore and protect this urban lake.

The event is free and open to the public. Snacks and water will be provided. Wake Up for Wapato is part of an ongoing effort by Metro Parks Tacoma, UW Tacoma Environmental Program and City of Tacoma Surface Water Management to involve the community in monitoring and improving surface water quality within the Wapato Lake watershed.
