Wow... no prize and it is PACNW misty raining out there. I foresee a huge turnout today :P

However, for those crazy enough to do it for glory and soggy bottoms alone I am willing to offer up free admission for one to tomorrow night's Dockyard Derby Dames Championship Bout ( ) for the winner.

For second, third and forth place I'll offer one of my Dockyard Derby Dame posters to each person.

I also propose a roller derby theme for this moist Chalk Off.

Wow! Busy sidewalk today and lots of fine creative chalking (even Adam....). but I vote for Mark's stairway to the Tacoma Netherworld - it made me dizzy.

I am sure that Tacomahickadee is enjoying the skate themed drawings from her cripple couch.

by NineInchNachos

are you sure it wasn't Mark's shirt making you dizzy? Look at that thing!

This roller derby girl with a broken ankle and foot (and black eye) from roller derby practice on Monday lobbies everyone to vote for Joel ... it would make my stuck-on-the-couch-for-a-month month. :)

pretty please? I was supposed to see my first derby bout tomorrow for PapaTacoma and my anniversary, and I'm stuck on the couch due to roller derby! Pity me and VOTE FOR JOEL! ;)

I would like to think that there is a really cool bar down those steps, or maybe a forgotten subway system. There are so many cool forgotten things about Tacoma that every time I turn around I'm discovering something old as new.

I cast a very selfish Vote for Mark.

In case you can't quite read the lettering on the sign, it says, "Watch Your Step."

OOPS, broken ankle and LEG ... must be the pain meds typing.

on 6/25/2010 @ 4:39pm
I really do enjoy Stowe's infographic. It is info-filled.

I vote for Joel, though. Because @tacomachickadee is awesome, and broken after a spectacular fall.

I've been enjoying a monastic existence too much this week to step out today.

I really like Thorax's monochrome piece, but I've decided to cast my VOTE for Monlux's Downward Descent. Another great optical illusion by Marky Mark!

on 6/25/2010 @ 7:41pm
My vote is for Joel (and speedy recovery for Chickadee).

by jamesstoweart
on 6/25/2010 @ 7:49pm
Pivots lead the pack and determine the speed of the blockers. In order to initiate a scoring drive a Jammer needs to legally pass each blocker and pivot once without going out of bounds. The Jammer that succeeds in doing this first becomes the Lead Jammer. Then both Jammers can race around again. Each opponent blocker and jammer they pass scores them one point. At any point during a scoring drive the Lead Jammer can call off the jam... and the players reset.

by debivans

My VOTE goes to Monlux's stairs.

by Earthdaughter

Voting this season is like being handed an organic basket of fruit and told you can only have one! How does one truly choose between the beautifully crafted black-on-white moon with flower by TO'T, the stairway which I probably would have fallen down by Mark, Adam's "far out" Alien skater, Stowe's delightful derby dames, Brian's awesome panorama and all the other lovely entries? I guess it's just like saying, "Well, I like them all but tonight I feel like grapes!" So tonight I feel like voting for Monlux's stairway!

"...or maybe a forgotten subway system" --- Mark

If ever you are in downtown Portland, go to the Pioneer courthouse right across the street from Pioneer Courthouse Square in the center of DT and you'll find a blue staircase that's gated off. Rumor is that it's a subway system that was never completed down there... at least that's what I was told.

Everyone did a great job. I would have voted for Adam the Al ien, Shannancy, Stuart, or Raven but I cast my vote to Joel since Alicia is my big sis. Get well soon Alicia!

Mark, RR, Stuart, Joel, Thorax and Brian were my favs by far this week but I vote Stowe for his clean and simple roller derby rundown. (also not his prediction from tomorrow night's championship bout)

Great job everyone!

Jesse and Mark -

I used to work in downtown PDX backin the mid-80s. The stairs between Pioneer Courthouse Square and Pioneer Courthouse itself go down to old, long abandoned, public restrooms. Needless to say, without a FT attendant (like in the old old days) they become a messy scary nuisance and were closed.

by L.S.Erhardt
on 6/25/2010 @ 11:40pm
@ RXR... you can have some of that white.
For a mere $1.00 I will sell you a stick. It's about 3x the volume of a normal crayola white, and it's buttery smooth.

A note to all chalkers:
If you want one of my awesome homebrew white chalk, I'll happily take orders. $1 per stick will cover my expenses. It takes a week to dry, so be sure to give me a heads up if you want one.

by Adam the Alien

Having seen Brian's piece continue on after the photo was taken, I must vote for Brian's lovely, lovely sunset. It is a thing a beauty.

MR. O'Tool, put me down for four (4) sticks of white. I'll pay top dollar! do you do a prang-bright red? have you experimented with chalk-line refill powder?

Myself? I am experimenting with clumps of natural clay deposits I am developing into the first 'concrete grey-out chalk eraser'

by L.S.Erhardt
on 6/26/2010 @ 12:16am
No, never tried line refill powder. Where do I get some?
I've tried red, but I'm running into two problems.

1) Red is VERY difficult to get right (get a lot of magentas)
2) Colors look good, but the consistency isn't as buttery as the white.

RR, I'll get your order rolling this week, as soon as I can.
If you want to see how my colors perform, feel free to try 'em out next Friday.

Four wicked photos for your enjoyment. Click on any to see 'em BIGGER

Close up of my piece. For whatever reason, this is my favorite of the ones I've done.

Stewart and Raven... chalking side by side. It's great to see the next generation of chalkers getting their hands dirty.

Brian in action, amidst the weeds.

A wicked-cool vertical panorama. I'm not a very good stitcher, but I do what I can.
After looking at it, I'm actually a sucky stitcher.
Oh well... the idea is neat, at least.

Wow, what a week for voting, I didn't see any dangling chads this week, and all votes got in under the wire. That being said I tally a total of 34 votes (may be a new record - 36 if you count each individual RR vote) Based on the results I think someone else will need to verify them for fairness:

Joel 9
Monlux 8
Brian 6
Thorax 4
Stowe 3
Stuart, debivans, RR, and Adam the Alien 1 each

If the results are verified, Stowe, my phone number is on my facebook profile :) I smell DATE NIGHT!!

At one time there were restrooms underground in downtown Tacoma. Check it out at:

by Jesse
on 6/26/2010 @ 6:44pm
Isn't there a parking lot there now Crenshaw?

Old pics of t-town sorta make me mad. It was such a complete city at one time.

by Crenshaw Sepulveda
on 6/26/2010 @ 9:35pm
Sadly that corner is a parking lot. The restroom stairs, however, are in the middle of the street if you can imagine. I wonder if the old restroom is still under the street. It is kind of sad to see pictures of downtown Tacoma when it was functional.
