can we make the poster graphic big?

by KevinFreitas

The one up above? Not at this point but I've still got a couple options to build in so perhaps a large image display can be one of them.

I can wait to see what comes of the Stowe vs. Andrea challenge issued last week! I think the theme was audience participation so everyone should come with their ideas to try and stump these dueling chalkers!

FYI I have the free Chalk.. if anyone has extra charcoal I can borrow this week, I'm going to need a ton of black and forgot to stock up :(

the community stockpile has a fresh supply of charcoal.

I can't draw but I can start a bonfire and produce charred wood. Will that work?

by jamesstoweart
on 4/30/2010 @ 11:47am
I had completely forgotten about my challenge.

Which is good and bad.

Good since I had no ideas for today.

Bad because I have already received a few suggestions and one I was actually going to go with.

I guess I'll see how things play out at the Park.

I misinterpreted the ground rules for the personal chalk-off bout.

...So I drew a TacoMan that craps ice cream.

Should have added a Cartman-Stowe.

I vote for Debivans.

I was torn by Jeremy's amazing work but in the end I had to go with Debivans and the homage to 2001 a Space Odyssey, super good work.

Debivans---if Zarathustra still spake, he'd vote for debivans as well, I'd bet...

runner up would be Thorax's dragon

I am going to do two things I normally don't do for Chalk Offs.

First I am going to vote early.

Second I am going to vote for myself...

...because I am a Washington State transplant and I am a football fan and I am a 12th Man and (most importantly) because this is 4 time All-Pro offensive lineman Walter Jones Day.

by izenmania
on 4/30/2010 @ 4:22pm
As the idea-suggester I believe I'll have to vote Stowe. Happy Walter Jones Day, everybody.

I found a rat in the park today!

Kevin helped give it a proper burial.

My piece- In reference to the new tax hike on cigarettes. The copy did not show up well in the pic, but it says: "Got Money to Burn? Smoke more for the Economy!" It's a picture of a rolled up dollar as a cigarette, my poor illustrative skillz.

Did you know that, on average, $.96 of the retail sale on a pack of cigarettes goes to the manufacturer, the rest goes to the government? I don't smoke, but that kind of return on anything is unheard of. I'm just in the wrong business, sheesh

I vote for me, in typical fashion.

Hmm... The Taco-Man might well give me nightmares. I do like the FCBD flyer... but I have to go for Big Walt. My long missing vote goes to Stowe.

Fun fun fun! This week was all kinds of fun, and I had no idea what was going on on the "Main stage" as I was around the corner putting my piece on the wall facing Pacific so that the runners will be able to see it on Sunday. My main entry for this week is the TCM logo, the "Go Big Dawgs" is just my sign for my Marathon Relay teammates as they pass by at the end of the first leg of the relay.

So, having gotten around to see the other pieces and upon further reflection I VOTE for debivans.

Talk about coming out of the gate swinging, an absolute A+ effort for a rookie entry.. granted he did go past 1PM to finish coloring panels 7-9, but the work is great, and needed no words... just like the movie.

And while we are throwing around compliments... Tacoma is a blessing to me. I love this town and its people. I'm glad it took me in.

Debivans apparently isn't going to vote for his own work...

I'm voting for the very creative monkey strip by Debivans... despite the fact that the opening to that movie was soooo boring.

by Courtney
on 4/30/2010 @ 9:47pm
Really neat stuff this week!

RR- why the firestone tire though?

Jeremy has really come into his own! Love his Garfield pieces and it's good to see him and his family back.

Too many good pieces so hard to decide but...

My vote goes for Stowe. That portrait is amazing.

by KevinFreitas

Great works out there this week! Love Andrea's too cute taco-man and Stowe's Jones. Great job Jeremy -- you truly have progressed with your work! Loved joel's marathon piece, RR's tire, Thorax dragon. It's between Debivans and Ariel's green flash. Both nerdy astro goodness but I vote Ariel. Seeing a real green flash is a real treat but her may just be better.

See everyone next week!

My vote goes to the nine-panel monkey sequence. Go Debivans.

Wow, what a great week of art out there. Ariel, awesome job with the colors this week. Joel awesome city of Tacoma, our city is looking good. Stowe really good likeness of some football fellow.

My vote is Joel. I like the starkness of your color and architecture that you chose to display. NICE

I VOTE for myself. Mostly because I have inspired myself and, if your lucky, you may see the new superhero Green Flash in Tacoma next Friday.

Anybody else up for making Tacoma superhero's? we could make it a theme week!

Wow. New chalkers, great variety, lots of lookers. Although I love the Wells Fargo dragon, my vote goes to Debivans and the 2001 space odyssey chalk spoof - nice touch!

Sad that the Alien is missing, but you will soon see pics of him in best-man tuxedo with hammer of power...

I wanted to stay up to see the winner but got too tired. So tomorrow! Looking forward to awarding the prize.

Good luck, chalkers!

by debivans
on 4/30/2010 @ 11:30pm
Thanks for all the welcomes and kind words! I haveta get a little quicker. It went so fast, I started chalking and when I looked up there was just Thorax and the ice cream guy. It was super fun and I look forward to future chalk offs.

My VOTE goes to Dawn's green ciggy. I'm in a long line at a Fife smoke shop right now. I don't smoke but with the tax hike I thought I should stock up just in case.

I'm going to have to VOTE for Debvians and the monkey panels. I almost went with Stowe for the detail, but I simply adore the monkey story.

The first year of Frost Park, I made a similar chalk omage to 2001, but wasn't nearly as well-done.

Ha ha, that RxR Firestone drawing alludes to a New Agey/Emerging Fem illustrator named R. Firestone who likewise makes the invisible visible by channelling and translating the mysterious spiritual essence of normally boring people. Or maybe she just stares at people intensely, speaks rapidly in tongues, then quickly sketches their mug and presents it to them with a hefty price tag and collects her fee before they regain their composure.

the apparently chicken scratches on the tire tread is actually ghost whisperer short hand spirit poem ode to profits written in a state of organic rapture.

Thank you T-Town! I am honored and I look forward to the City Club dinner where I understand fellow JET Building artist and pal Margi Legowik will be speaking. I'm starting out my Wednesday with a tour of the Hanford Nuclear Site and ending it with a Tacoma Arts Panel discussion? Sounds about right. What to chalk next week? Hmm...

Actually, I cannot. No photos allowed at the Hanford site. Not supposed to bring phones or any other electronic equipment. I wonder if I can bring a sketchbook? I will take pics of the City Club dinner if C.C.T. security allows me.

Thx Joel, I'm a fan too. Anyone else have any comments pro/con doing this sort of thing in the event? Think other events would make use of the comments? (I could see it being very cool for people to be able to come back after an event, talk about it, post pics, etc)

So, can someone tell me exactly what went down, especially in regard to the Stowe/Andrea challenge? I've got some video clips from this week, courtesy of Joel, and between those and the pictures I have enough material to put together a video, even though I was gone. I also have clips I couldn't fit into the previous week's video in which Stowe challenges Andrea. However, the video clips Joel gave me and the comments in this thread give me no actual indication as to what happened and how it happened, so I'm left lacking crucial information that I need to have any kind of narrative for this video.
