MetroParks Tacoma’s Revenue Task Force Responds to Controversy

City Club June dinner program

MetroParks Tacoma has faced increasing financial burdens over the years, without sufficient revenues to keep up with the demands. So last year the elected board of parks commissioners assigned a revenue task force of community volunteers to look at ideas for generating new funds. Their first guideline was to be bold and innovative, and they were. The commission, led by Matt Dmytryszyn, published its recommendations in November ’07, and an uproar has ensued in recent months over suggestions that MetroParks has not adequately involved the public in its planning for the future. City Club’s June 4 dinner forum will feature Matt and other members of the task force about the process, their findings, and their thoughts on the controversy surrounding their work. Panelists will include:

§ Matt Dmytryszyn – research analyst, Russell Investments; chair of MetroParks’ Business Advisory Council; and an avid user of the park system

§ Kurt Jacobson – president, JayRay, a marketing and public relations consulting firm

§ Mike McLeod – private real estate developer, former parks and recreation director at Central Washington University, and a member of MetroParks Tacoma’s Marine Advisory Council and Business Advisory Council

§ Tom Oliva – an employee of Washington State Parks who oversees the enterprise activities for the state parks system

§ Jim Walton – former city manager, City of Tacoma

Join us at this forum about how the parks district might shore up its long-term financial health.
