Eric Etheridge Talk

on Breach of Peace

Eric Etheridge will talk about his new book Breach of Peace: Portraits of the 1961 Mississippi Freedom Riders. In the spring and summer of 1961, several hundred Americans converged on Jackson, Mississippi to challenge state segregation laws. Although it was illegal for bus and train stations to discriminate, in practice few were interested in change. The Freedom Riders, as they came to be known, faced violent attacks, police harassment, and hostility for standing up for civil rights. Over 300 people were arrested and convicted on the charge "breach of peace". Breach of Peace features over seventy contemporary photographs, alongside the original mug shots, and exclusive interviews with former Freedom Riders.

Eric Etheridge grew up in Carthage, Mississippi. He is a former editor at Rolling Stone, The New York Observer and Harper’s. He lives in New York City.
