Anu Garg Talk

on Language Myths & Hoaxes

Wordsmith Anu Garg will talk about common and uncommon misconceptions people have about words and languages. Do Eskimos really have 150 words for snow? Are some languages harder than others? Are there languages that have no grammar? Did the word TIP originate as an acronym for "To Insure Promptness"? Is poor grammar a sign of laziness? Discover answers to these and other topics in this entertaining and humorous presentation on language myths and hoaxes.

Anu Garg is the author of three books on words, his most recent being The Dord, the Diglot, and an Avocado or Two: The Hidden Lives and Strange Origins of Words. He is the founder of and has A.Word.A.Day newsletter that goes out out to 600,000 linguaphiles in 200 countries. The event PA system will be powered with renewable energy by Solar Richard. The event is also a fundraiser for the Scholars and Champions Association, a nonprofit raising money for Tacoma Public Schools.
